Four Tips on ‘Going Pro’ as a Tarot Reader :: Tarot Tuesday

“What do I need to consider about going professional as a tarot reader?” This is a question I’ve been asked several times recently. I’m still green in this endeavor – I’ve only been reading professionally for six months! It still feels weird to refer to myself as a “professional”, but I’m trying to get comfortable owning that label.

I am not going to put on airs and act like I’m more experienced than I am. But since people are asking, and it is a topic I enjoy talking about, I’ve put together four tips I’d offer anyone who is thinking about taking the plunge into going pro as a tarot reader. This is my honest perspective from where I am on my personal journey. I hope it helps!

1. Develop confidence in your abilities.

The very first thing to consider is how confident you are in your tarot abilities. Do your readings tend to flow smoothly or do you often go blank? Have you become adept at tying the cards together to form the overarching story of a reading?

This doesn’t mean you need to be perfect. I’ve heard people who have been reading for decades say they still get nervous sometimes! There’s ALWAYS more to learn about tarot. However, you need a solid baseline level of confidence in order to venture into reading professionally.

It is easy to under or over estimate your own abilities as a tarot reader. Actively requesting feedback from your querents is super useful in this respect. If you’re consistently getting positive feedback, this is a great indication that you have what it takes to ‘go pro.’

2. Define what “professional” means to you.

When it comes to tarot, there’s not a universal definition of ‘professional.’ Sure, you can take courses, join associations and earn certificates. But unlike other disciplines such as teaching and nursing, there’s not an overarching organization governing who can practice in the field.

This means you get to define what being a ‘professional’ reader means for you. Maybe it simply means you have a high level of confidence in your craft. It could mean starting a side business while you work a day job. You might decide that being a professional means studying business and devoting to making tarot your full time work. Or maybe it’s something else entirely!

It’s okay to take baby steps. Going professional doesn’t have to mean quitting your job and diving in to self-employment (which is, ahem, what I did). It’s important to move at a pace that feels good to you, but it’s also important to push yourself out of your comfort zone. Whatever you decide, remember that you’re a professional tarot reader because you say you are. It’s as simple as that!

3. Get clear on your reading style and ethics.

When you go pro you’ll need to convey your reading style to others. If you’ve been reading tarot for a while, you probably have a good idea of what kind of reader you are. For example, are you nurturing or no-nonsense? Do you specialize in certain topics (relationships, spirituality, career, etc)? Are your readings predictive or advice-driven? The more clear you are on your style, the better!

I strongly encourage you to write up your own code of ethics. If you’re not sure where your boundaries are, you will be flummoxed the first time someone asks you for a reading on a subject you’re not comfortable with. You can check out my personal code of ethics to give you some ideas, but I’m not saying my ethics are the one true way! You can uphold whatever ethics call to you. The important thing is identifying them and sticking to them.

To me, upholding a code of ethics is one of the true marks of a professional reader. Being a tarot reader is a big responsibility. People will tell you things they can’t talk to anyone else about, people will trust you to offer advice about their deepest issues. You want to be an ethical, trustworthy reader who helps bring tarot into a more positive light in the world at large.

4. Remember your big ‘Why.’

This might be the most important advice I have. Choosing to be a professional tarot reader is not for the faint of heart! Sometimes you’ll get funny looks when you meet new people and tell them what you do. Sometimes your mind will go blank in the middle of a reading. Sometimes you’ll struggle to find clients. When things get rough for me, remembering why I do what I do is essential. This keeps me optimistic and centered.

When I decided to go pro, I asked my cards what I most needed to know and I drew the Six of Cups. Staying in a good emotional space is crucial. Be generous and kind. Come from a place of pure, good intentions. Open your heart. Always remember that your readings are a gift to the world.

Regardless of what happens on your path as a tarot professional, by giving readings with compassion and empathy you are making the world a better place. Always remember that.

PS: If you’d like to have a one-on-one talk with me, I’d be happy to answer your personal questions and offer individual advice on your road to becoming a tarot professional. You can purchase a Skype session with me on my readings page and we can discuss your unique situation. We can do this as an actual tarot reading, or just a conversation. Whichever you prefer.

Why I Do What I Do :: Tarot Tuesday

There’s a ‘Why I Do What I Do’ tag circling through the blogging world, and what do you know? TAG, I’m it! So, why do I do what I do? This query seems simple. But when I let myself simmer with this question, I realized it’s deceptively deep.

WHAT do I do? Anything and everything pertaining to tarot! I write blog posts inspired by the cards. I make videos every week. I do personal, private readings via email and Skype for clients.

Why do I do this? Because I want to be truly alive. I want to have the deepest, richest, most enjoyable experience I can while I am on this planet. I believe that I am on my own hero’s journey and that what I am doing with Happy Fish Tarot has a powerful, mythological meaning.

I have a ceaseless drive to explore and expand. I want to find meaning not only in my own life, but also in the broader existence of humanity, the world, the universe. Tarot makes me feel plugged in to an energy that flows through everything. In tarot, I see patterns that help me know myself and understand my place in the bigger picture.

Tarot has helped bring clarity to my own psyche, and I always find myself relating the cards back to life lessons I’ve learned. Making that correlation lights me up. This is why I write. It’s my way of sharing my tarot ‘aha moments’ with others who might resonate.

Life feels like slowly putting together a never-ending puzzle. Tarot provides clues and nudges that help the picture come into focus. The goal isn’t to complete the puzzle, the goal is the process. If we had all the answers, where would the fun be?

I believe that people are wired up to understand life through stories. Tarot gives me an avenue to connect the dots, to find a cohesive plot line in what might otherwise be perceived as random events. Tarot can help you shift your experiences by giving you deeper perspectives on the unfolding of your life.

And now I’ll say what you probably expect me to say: I do it to help people. But that’s not a satisfying answer, most everyone wants to help people. I do what I do because tarot plays to my specific strengths, my way of helping. Tarot gives me the ‘launching point’ to nudge others into self-discovery.

A lot of people walk around with heavy loads. We’re plagued by self doubt, betrayals, and a million other pains. I know I can’t solve all the problems of the world. But I do believe that through tarot, I can do SOMETHING to help lessen the weight someone is carrying. If I can help you release a smidgen of negative energy, I reap the benefits of that as well. In helping others, I also help myself.

That…in a nutshell…is why I do what I do! Thanks to the lovely Kristen Jett for tagging me. Kristen is a sparkly, marketing maven and a gem of a human being. She’s funny, savvy, and helps people draft their lives their own dang way at herownblueprints.com.

My turn to tag: here’s who’s up.

Noelle of Three Miles An Hour
Noelle is one of the most bad-ass people I have had the privilege of knowing in real life (sometimes I forget there is a world outside of the internet). This is a woman who isn’t afraid to make bold moves. She followed her dreams from her home in the states all the way to London where she proceeded to walk every street in the congestion zone. Yeah, you read that correctly: she walked EVERY street in central London! She’s now blogging about her attempts to live, love, travel and learn at a walking pace. You can find Noelle at threemilesanhour.com.

Áine of Heart Story
I connected with Áine through our mutual passion for tarot. Her tarot style is focused on helping people connect with their inner voice and find their own personal Heart Story. She’s quickly become one of my favorite tarot gals because of her nurturing and genuine approach. What strikes me the most about Áine is how real she is. She isn’t afraid to share her struggles, but she does so in a positive, inspiring way. You can feel the amount of thought she puts into all of her online content. It’s always deep, never fluffy. Check her out at heartstory.org.

Gail of A Series of Adventures
I met Gail through our mutual adoration of the Desire Map. She’s another lovely lady I have the privilege of knowing IRL. I always enjoy meeting people who are actively embracing their dreams, and Gail does so with an unparalleled level of grace. She’s a travel writer and photographer who is in the process of making her dream life her reality. It gives me goosebumps to see how passionate and articulate this woman is! I really admire how she approaches life with just the right mix of logic and magic. Her digital base is aseriesofadventures.com.

Communicating With Your Two Selves :: Tarot Tuesday

(First things first: how adorable is my cat, Nanners? Really damn adorable, I’d say.)

In ‘Finding Your Own North Star,’ Martha Beck suggests that we all have two aspects: our essential self, and our social self. This resonated with me on a deep level as I’ve been observing these two parts of myself for several years now!

The essential self is your innermost spirit, your core. This is the part of you that would be consistent regardless of what year or place you were born. The essential self represents the things you would do and the way you would react if you did not have social conditioning. The essential self is free flowing, your untamed energy – much like the Fool.

The social self is the part of you that has learned to adapt to external demands. This is the part of your personality formed based on culture, education, the values of society. This is the personality that is the easiest for most of us to show to the world. The social self has strong will-power and is self-filtering – similar to the Chariot.

Your social self can become overpowering and cause you to lose touch with your essential self. I was unhappy for several years before I realized this was the cause: I was under the staunch control of my social self. My life began slowly shifting as I started taking steps to evoke my essential self.

Many people in the tarot/personal growth/spirituality arena are already strong advocates of empowering the essential self. I think this is great! We’ve had a strong value on the social self for so long, it’s time to actively encourage the pendulum swing in the other direction.

However, it is important to remember that the social self is not the enemy (Martha Beck makes a big point of this in her book). Your social self is just as important to your whole being as your essential self. You need to encourage your essential self to come out to play, but there’s no need to exile your social self!

Neither one of these aspects are effective without the influence of the other. If we only operated using our essential selves, we would daydream, react impulsively, and have a hard time channeling our energy effectively. On the other hand, if we let our social self run the show, we would focus only on getting ahead, gaining approval, and staying inside the lines.

According to Martha Beck (and I agree), the key is getting these two aspects to communicate openly and work together. But how in the heck do you do that?!

Encouraging peace between the different aspects within you is a lifelong practice, there’s no ‘quick fix.’ Tarot is a tool that will aid you time and time again on this journey.

The social self can be ridiculously stubborn. A lot of us have a hard time getting it to quiet down enough to let the essential self break through the noise. Tarot helps by giving a voice to the essential self, and creating an atmosphere in which the social self is willing to listen and interact.

Your essential self speaks the wordless language of symbols, feelings and intuition.

Your essential self resonates with the timeless archetypes embedded in the realm of tarot.

Tarot can foster the unfolding of your essential self, giving it a means to express its perspective.

The Social Self is also integral when working with tarot. This is the part of us that puts the reading into words. The social self gives form to the untapped energy and messages in the cards. Without the participation of both selves, a tarot reading will not reach its maximum potency.

This is the reason you feel integrated after a well-done tarot reading. Your essential self has been heard, and your social self had had its say as well. You walk away knowing that both of these internal aspects are validating each other. They are both on the same team…at least for now!

“What Do I Need to Know About Moving For a New Opportunity?” :: Dear Tarot Tuesday

Welcome to Dear Tarot Tuesday! In this video series, I answer questions from viewers, advice-column style. But this isn’t your momma’s advice column – my answers will be enhanced with tarot cards. If you’d like to submit a question of your own, shoot me an email: carrie (at) happyfishtarot.com.

Boy howdy! It’s been a while since I’ve done a ‘Dear Tarot’ video. My videos as of late have gone in a slightly different direction. But today, I’m going back to my roots and giving a mini-video reading.

Today I have a question from “S” who says: “I am thinking about stepping into the unknown, stepping out my comfort zone and trying something completely new. This will involve volunteering with an autistic boy in a new city. What do I need to know about this decision?”

And now I have a question for you: do you enjoy watching the mini-reading videos? Should I do more? I do plan to continue putting up videos every Tuesday – but I’ll only do the ‘Dear Tarot’ series if there is an interest.

Resistance and The War of Art :: Tarot Tuesday

As I sat down to create today’s video and blog post, a curious thing happened. My mind went blank. My brain was encased in ice. I had the urge to do ANYTHING other than my work. Clean the bathroom, fold the laundry, let’s do it.

I was experiencing a phenomenon I’ve come to call ‘Resistance.’ Steven Pressfield describes this concept in depth in his book, ‘The War of Art.’ It’s a must-read if you want to improve your life in any form.

We experience resistance when we try to do anything that moves us from a lower plane of existence to a higher plane. Have you ever found yourself eating chocolate cake on day three of your diet? Have you been gung-ho about a resolution for the New Year only to be back in your old habits by February? Started any kind of creative project and had a tough time moving forward?

If so, you’ve met your own Resistance.

Resistance is a tricky character and manifests itself in various ways. Procrastination is one of Resistance’s favorite tactics. Self-doubt, comparing yourself to others, and apathy are also tools in Resistance’s arsenal. Because Resistance is so shady, I associate it with the Devil card from the Tarot.

Despite this association, it’s important to remember that Resistance is not an ‘evil’ force. Resistance is simply a force within us that wants to maintain the status quo. Resistance likes things how they are. Resistance wants you to remain complacent.

It’s helpful to think of Resistance as a force. This makes it into something tangible, something we can begin to understand. I was dealing with my own Resistance for years before I had the terminology to articulate my experience. I mistakenly thought I was lazy. I felt guilty. I thought I didn’t want things bad enough.

None of this was true. I was just facing massive Resistance.

In fact, feeling guilty and berating yourself only makes things worse. Resistance feeds on this kind of drama.

Here’s the bad news: Resistance doesn’t magically go away. Every time I sit down to work on my novel or create content for Happy Fish Tarot, I must face my own Resistance. Steven Pressfield says that the more important a project is to our evolution, the stronger Resistance we will experience.

Here’s the good news: you can still do great things despite the presence of Resistance. The first step is simply having a name for your experience. This lets you stop thinking there is something wrong with you. When you’re tempted to stray from your path, procrastinate, or give up, you can now think to yourself:

This is Resistance.

It isn’t as scary when it has a name.

What can we do about Resistance? Here’s the number one, super-uber-Resistance-facing-strategy: just keep going. It’s going to take all the strength you can muster. Sometimes it will feel like you’re dragging yourself through the mud. That’s okay. That’s normal. Sit down and do your work. As they say, feel the fear and do it anyway.

Here’s some even better news. We all have access to forces that are the opposite of Resistance, and just as strong. Steven Pressfield refers to these as angels and muses. You can use whatever language you’re comfortable with.

These are the forces that want to foster your creativity. They want to lift you up. Whisper ideas into your ears. Guide you towards what you need. They want to fuel you in moving to a higher plane of existence.

Resistance may see unsurmountable, but it never is. Call in your guides. Assemble your angels. If that seems too ‘out there’, draw upon your higher nature or your inner genius. I’ve taken on the Star card as the representation of my Inspiration, and I like to keep this card propped up next to me as I write. I ask the Star to give me the light to continue on despite whatever tricks Resistance tries to throw at me.

Don’t underestimate the power of your muses. They can kick Resistance’s ass.

This is barely scraping the surface of my thoughts on Resistance. It’s a hairy, nuanced topic. I’ll be discussing this more in the future.

Until then, go forth to the battlefield and walk with your muses.

Permission to Want What You Want :: Tarot Tuesday

A few moons ago I was stuck, frozen, listless. I wanted to live creatively. I wanted to write and dye my hair and tell the truth and be a general badass. But I was not taking any action. I didn’t realize it at the time, but I was afraid (terrified) of letting myself really want what I wanted. Wanting something makes you vulnerable. Wanting something means you run the risk of not getting it.

When I couldn’t take the pain any longer, I was compelled to sit down and write a bucket list. I’d never done so before, and it took all the strength I could muster to ignore the voice in my head telling me that this act was pointless.

When I finished writing, a veil was lifted in my consciousness. A block I had been harboring for years had been loosened. I knew this was a significant act, but I couldn’t articulate why until a few years later when I discovered Danielle LaPorte and heard her talk about giving yourself permission to want what you want.

That’s what I had done when I wrote a list of things I wanted to accomplish, achieve and experience.

I had given myself permission to actually want what I wanted.

Immense masses of the human population prevent themselves from really, truly owning their desires. They tell themselves what they want is unrealistic, immature, impossible, selfish. People who could bring forth joy, healing and innovation are unable to take the first step because they can’t give themselves permission to want what they want.

Some of us manage to go half-in on our desires. We put our feet in the water, but we’re cautious. We stay distant and aloof to protect ourselves. We play coy. We are diluted. This is a game I’ve mastered, and it can go on for a lifetime. But if you’re not fully owning your desires, you’re not potent. And if you’re not potent, you’re only half alive.

The magic happens when you stand headfirst under the waterfall, immersed in your longing.

Own what you want, name it, claim it, allow it. Even if only to yourself.
tweet this!

This gives you the fuel you need to start the slow climb of making your desires your reality.

Let’s get to the core of the matter: we’re afraid of wanting. Wanting makes you vulnerable. You’re open to rejection. You might look like an idiot. People might laugh. You might fail epically. You might succeed wildly.

It is fucking terrifying to give yourself permission to want. Take it from me. I know, honey, I know. Even if we’re brave enough to give ourselves permission to want what we want, we’re still not guaranteed to get it. You can feel that desire – feel that yearning, craving, longing – you can feel it with every fibre of your being and still never see it come to fruition. And what then?

It has taken me this long to realize that my self-worth is not wrapped up in getting what I want. My novel might stagnate, my business might fail, people might talk, I might go broke. And that’s okay. I am always, and you are always, a glorious, shining, worthy soul.

Be bold. Be potent. Feel it. Allow yourself to want what you want.
tweet this!

Look your blocks, fears and weaknesses in the eye. If you’re able to take this risk, you’re in for the ride of a lifetime. Hang on tight.

Virtual or Personal? Email vs face to face readings :: Tarot Tuesday Video

I love the charm of a written tarot reading – but there’s something magical about a good ol’ face to face reading as well. When it comes to tarot readings, which format should you go with? The answer will depend on your personality and what you want to get out of the reading experience. Let’s talk about a few things that might be helpful to consider.

Email Tarot Readings

There are few things I relish more than giving and receiving tarot readings via email. When I am a seeker (the person receiving the reading) I will most often request an email reading. This format provides a permanent, written beacon of guidance which can be referenced time and time again. Want to revisit a reading you got 10 years ago? Email readings make this possible.

Self Talk: Your Inner Emperor & Empress :: Tarot Tuesday Video

If you’re like me, you probably want to be a reasonably inspired, productive & creative individual. There are things you need to do to live the life you want, and you have the task of getting yourself to actually do those things.

So, how do you get yourself to cooperate? Are you self-disciplined & rigid? Or are you nurturing & flowing? Are you too hard on yourself? Or maybe too coddling? Are your Emperor & Empress cooperating, or are they at odds?

In this video, I talk about how each of us has our own inner Emperor & Empress. We tend to let one of them run the show – but I’ve discovered things go more smoothly when we get them to work together.
