How to get the most magic from an email tarot reading

You find yourself in need of some thoughtful guidance, so you decide to purchase an email tarot reading from someone you trust. You wait patiently and before too long, the email arrives with your reading attached. Eek, so exciting!

But wait! What you do from here has a drastic impact on the potency of your reading. It’s soooo tempting to do the virtual equivalency of ripping open that email and feasting your eyes on the reading as quickly as possible – but this approach doesn’t lend itself well to accessing the full potential of email readings.

It’s so important to make taking in your reading a special thing. In our virtual world, we’re constantly bombarded with mindless online content: salesy emails, click bait articles, endless social media posts…don’t treat a tarot reading like another member of this parade. Your email reading isn’t some average online fluff; it deserves a more conscious approach.

Any tarot reading – whether it’s delivered through email, Skype, phone, in person or via carrier pigeons – is a significant event. A reading can reconnect you with your inner knowing and nudge you into powerful transformations. It’s a co-creative process: the reader does their part, but real magic only happens when you do your part, too.

Here are a few steps to help you tap into the highest potential of your next email reading.

1. Set aside quiet time to absorb your reading. If you’ve ever received a reading from me, I’ve probably suggested this to you already! An email reading creates a sort of non-physical sacred space. If you open your reading in a hectic environment, it’s probably going to be harder for you to enter that sacred space. If at all possible, schedule in some quiet “me time” to give the reading your full presence.

2. Brew a cup of tea. It has been well-documented that tea and tarot are wonderful partners. I think tea can help get us in a sort of ritual mindset. In fact, making tea itself is a sort of mini-ritual: boiling the water, selecting the right blend for your mood, letting the steeping take place. There have even been studies that show what many of us already know through direct experience: drinking tea can sooth stress. Having an inviting cup of tea by your side will enhance the overall experience of your reading.

3. Read slowly. The first time I purchased an email reading, I was so excited that I skimmed through the whole thing like I was in a speed-reading contest. I quickly realized that doing this is a huge disservice to myself. Instead, breathe. Give yourself time to linger on the words. Take in their full meaning. Let them sink in and roll around your consciousness. Mmm, yeah, that slow stuff feels good!

4. Journal and reflect. This is probably the most important item on the list! A good reading doesn’t tell you exactly what to do. Instead, a good reading helps you see the bigger picture, gives gentle advice, and guides you in self-reflection. It’s one thing to just read your reading and think “hmm, that’s interesting.” But it’s better to take that even further by really diving into reflection. Many readers (myself included) pepper readings with journaling prompts; don’t just read them, use them! Grab a journal or a word document and write about the main takeaways of your reading. What really hit home? How can you integrate the messages and tap into your sense of empowerment going forward?

5. Revisit your reading. You’ll probably get an intuitive sense for when and how often to re-read your reading. Some readings will beckon to you regularly (I’ve had multiple clients tell me they’ve printed their Bad Ass Manifesto readings and read them daily), others you might not revisit for a month or two or more. Although the exact “when” will vary, you’ll find new levels of wisdom emerge when you revisit your reading.

So, what do you think?

Do you have your own practices for getting the most out of email readings? Will you be trying any of the suggestions above? I’m curious – leave a comment and let me know.

Unpacking the I’m Not Good Enough Fear :: Pondering Pentacles

Throughout the month of April, I’ve been talking about business in a series called Pondering Pentacles. This post was originally going to be only a few paragraphs within another post, but as I started writing it, I realized there was a lot to say! If you want to start or grow your business but have been plagued by the fear that you ‘aren’t good enough,’ I hope this will give you some useful points to consider.

The fear that we are not good enough is a core theme that is almost universal among humans. This is a mindset that cripples people from exploring creative avenues, a fear that squashes many would-be entrepreneurs. This is a belief that, left unchecked, darkens souls and destroys dreams like a wrecking ball. Other than that, it’s no big deal!

When you encounter this fear, you essentially have two options. Option one: let the fear win and don’t even bother starting or expanding your business. Or option two: explore the fear and embrace the process of self-discovery (you can stop reading here if you want to choose option one, btw).

Try thinking of it this way: your fear that you aren’t good enough is actually a gift to you as a healer. I think it’s your calling to bring this fear into the light. Examine it, gently untangle the roots. As you explore what helps you heal this belief, you’ll find insights that will be useful for the people you work with.

The most genuine healers I’ve encountered are the ones who have grappled with their own fears. You need to be equipped with more than just platitudes and theories – if you want to guide others, you need direct experience navigating your own challenges. This is why it’s actually invigorating for me to think that so many of us deal with this fear that we aren’t good enough. Dealing with this fear for yourself is part of learning to practice what you preach.

Unpacking the fear that you’re not good enough is a tangled, complicated process. There isn’t one simple trick to “overcome” this fear. In fact, this is one of those fears with many arms – it manifests in all sorts of ways, and stems from a wide array of factors. You know, one of those good old fashioned deep-seated issues that you could easily spend YEARS trying to fully understand.

Diving into this fear is a deeply personal, nuanced journey and it will look different for you than it does for me. However, there do seem to be some common trends at work, and we can explore a few of them here. I offer these ideas not as end-all-be-alls, but in hopes that they might be useful for you as you continue your own self-discovery.

Criticism and safety

Like many fears, I think the fear of not being good enough harkens back to a primal desire to keep ourselves safe. If you let this fear win you don’t start a business or you don’t expand your current business. You don’t risk criticism. All so that you can stay “protected and safe.”

The fear that you aren’t good enough is often close friends with the fear of criticism. You may tell yourself you aren’t good enough in an unconscious attempt to beat everyone else to the punch of telling you the same thing. For varying reasons (childhood stuff, personal neuroses, past traumas, lizard brain and who knows what else), we human beings tend to be PETRIFIED of criticism. In fact, we are so afraid of criticism that we criticize the living fuck out of ourselves in order to avoid any risk of external criticism.

The most ironic thing is that listening to fear doesn’t REALLY keep you safe. Even if you let fear run the show and you don’t consciously risk criticism, you’re still going to get criticized. Remaining in the grips of fear doesn’t create real safety, it only creates a stifling illusion of safety. When you come to this conscious realization, things start to shift.

It’s useful to start by affirming to yourself that you can (and will) survive criticism (from yourself and from others). You’re so much stronger, so much more resilient than you give yourself credit for. Fear is notorious for, well, unfounded fear mongering. It IS safe for you step through the “I’m not good enough” haze, own your bad-assery and create a meaningful business.

I’m not perfect, so I can’t help anyone else

We get this idea in our heads that we can’t help anyone else through our business until we have completely categorized and labeled all of our own issues. We think we aren’t good enough to do healing work because oh-my-goodness we still have so much of our own healing to do.

This can be a double edged sword. On one side, it is important to be sensitive to your own evolution. When you are still in the thick of overcoming addictions or trying to integrate a major life lesson, you’ve got to be honest with yourself about that. It wouldn’t be authentic to claim you can teach people to heal wounds that are still raw within you. It’s toxic to put on a front, to act more put together than you really are.

But on the other side, if you’re waiting to reach enlightenment before moving forward in your business…you’ll probably be waiting a while. Like, a lifetime. Even once you sort through the lessons life is currently providing you, another set of lessons will be waiting around the corner. And then once you think you’ve come to grasps with THOSE lessons, you’ll encounter them again from a new angle. Enlightenment is not a state we reach and stay in forever, it’s something we’re constantly dancing in and out of.

This harkens back to what I talked about in the first part of this post. The most powerful thing you can do for your business is to commit to your own growth. In this way, your own life experiences can give you the wisdom you need to best serve your clients.

You do not have to be “perfect” in order to be of service to others through your business. In fact, I’ve found that the greatest sense of connection I’ve experienced in my business comes when I let myself be honest and vulnerable about my own inner battles (and I certainly have my fair share of inner battles!).

You don’t have to have an Instagram-worthy life, meticulously crafted blog posts and a raw vegan diet to be good enough to grow your business. You don’t have to be an expert or make your competition irrelevant or have 1000 subscribers overnight to be good enough. You don’t have to have perfect spelling and grammar and technology skills to be good enough. You don’t have to radiate positive vibes and self-assurance 100% of the time to be good enough.

You’re human. Humans are always learning, experimenting, messing up, learning. You’ll do the most good in your business when you stop expecting yourself to live up to some fabricated, marketing fueled idea of what “good enough” looks like. Don’t aim for impossible standards, aim to be honest, mindful, authentic and helpful.

Societal conditioning

The fear that we aren’t good enough can be bolstered by deeply engrained societal conditioning. This seems to be especially true for people who are already marginalized (women, people of color, LGBTQ people, etc), but can happen to anyone.

The mainstream societal narrative only encourages certain people (ie: white males) to take ownership for their talents. Some people are applauded as brave, self-confident and bold when they fully own their abilities. Other people are scoffed at as cocky, arrogant and egotistical when they display the same behavior. Yep, it’s pretty much BS.

When society has consistently told you in ways both explicit and subtle that you aren’t good enough, it’s really hard not to internalize some of that energy. It helps to start by consciously choosing to move deeper than the thoughts the belief systems that society has tried to force on you. Let yourself gently move beyond that and sit with what is true deep within you. It takes lots of de-programming, but eventually you’ll find the core belief that you ARE good enough, and that you’re only getting better – let THAT be the belief you choose cultivate.

In conclusion…

I’ve written over a thousand words about the fear of being not good enough and I still feel like I’ve barely scratched the surface! This isn’t a fear you can vanquish overnight, and that’s a good thing, because you’ll learn a lot as you continue exploring it for yourself.

Here’s something I believe with my whole heart: letting yourself fully see your fears while also fully owning your abilities is a magical combination. If you had already resigned yourself to the belief that you aren’t, and will never be, good enough; you wouldn’t be reading this. Something within you knows – something within you has always known – that you ARE good enough. It’s just a matter of doing the work to remind yourself again and again.

Your business means nothing & everything :: {Pondering Pentacles}

The Sun from Lumina Tarot & moi.

I’ve been staring at this blank document for some time now, trying to figure out how to best describe what I want to say here. Writing this post is bringing a feeling that many actions in my business bring me: a sensation that I’m exposing something deeply personal and private.

That’s what this type of creative, heart-centered, soul-inspired business does: it asks you to get honest with yourself, to dig into your own heart and come forward with some type of wisdom that might be useful to others.

My favorite sources of business wisdom come from a perspective that could easily interchange the term ‘business’ with the term ‘creativity.’ That’s what my business is to me – an ongoing project, something intertwined with who I am as a person, an expressive force. I really feel like my business exists because of a spiritual yearning, a sensation that I have been pulled to travel this path. To put it plainly, it feels like my business is a crucial part of my life’s purpose.

I am a curiously particular type of business owner. In fact, I’m not even really fond of the word “business” because it has a sort of aloof, suit-and-tie association. I call what I do a business because that’s an understandable label to use. But my business is more than just a business, and I’m more than a business owner.

My business is a creative process, a core part of my identity, a highly personal and always shapeshifting piece of art – and I’m the artist. My business is a hero’s journey – and I’m the hero. You know, no pressure there…

Usually, this approach to business feels mystical and intriguing and wonderful and meaningful. But sometimes it feels fucking heavy. Because my sense of self is so closely associated with my business, sometimes my perception gets distorted. It’s easy to make the grave mistake of basing my worth as a human on the state of my business.

If my business isn’t “succeeding” (whatever the heck that word means) it can feel like I’m fundamentally failing as a human being.

There’s a lot of rhetoric out there espousing that if you’re doing what you’re meant to be doing, the Universe will guide you and blast obstacles out of your way. Sure, you might have some trials here and there, but if you are REALLLLLY on the right path, things will work out and you’ll be victorious, right? That’s the way it works in fairy tales. That’s the way it works in all those spiritual memes you see on Instagram. So that’s the way it really works, right?

This whole concept of things working out if they’re destined to work out can be an empowering narrative, but it has a dark side. It can make you feel like maybe you’re not on the right track because right now, the Universe doesn’t seem to be doing diddly squat to help you. It can make you think maybe you aren’t good enough because you can’t seem to make this business thing work.

And worst of all, it can cause you to believe that if your business “fails” you will be utterly destroyed, unable to ever crawl out from the rubble because your worth as a human being was shattered in that very rubble.

This is one of the most potent spiritual lessons that my business journey has presented to me: the art of simultaneously honoring the deep personal importance my business represents, while also detaching my sense of inner sovereignty from this process. I hold paradoxical beliefs and aim to operate in a way that reflects these seemingly contradictory statements: my business is more significant than I can fathom and also not significant at all.

There’s one thing I can tell you in no uncertain terms: your worth as a human being is not defined by your business. If your business does exceedingly well, if people praise you and you make money and find fulfillment, your business doesn’t define your worth. And if your business fails and you go bankrupt and no one ever cares about your work, your business doesn’t define your worth.

The whole reason we become creators and business owners is to experience fulfillment, creativity and joy. And if we want to really experience those things, we need to cultivate a mindset that affirms our inherent worth as always in tact, regardless of external factors. Perhaps our most important work is bringing ourselves home to this mindset time and time again.

Pondering Pentacles is a series where I talk all about feeling good through your work. I’m here to talk about cultivating a business that feels like an authentic expression of yourself. I hope you’ll find something thought-provoking and useful here!

One of the things that has made me feel the most magical, creative, inspired and connected in my business is…

Yep – Instagram!

For a business owner, this platform can be fulfilling on multiple levels. It allows you to express yourself in multiple ways (visually in the images you share, and verbally in your captions). Instagram is also a place where communities thrive – commenting, liking and using specialized hashtags are all great ways to connect with the people who resonate with your business. And, of course, Instagram allows you to build meaningful relationships and reach new clients.

What I’m sayin’ is Instagram is a pretty special place.

The video I’m sharing here is brimming with in-depth, valuable tips on using Instagram for your business. I don’t want to toot my own horn, but what I talk about here is stuff many people would charge for. It’s really good information, delivered from my personal experience and soul-centered perspective. I originally shared this live on Periscope, I saved the video because I think it’s THAT GOOD.

You’ll learn:

  • How to create intriguing images (even if you’re not a photographer)
  • Why your caption is as vital as your photo
  • The difference between Suavely Polished and Grandma’s Attic accounts

Biz Energy Snapshot Tarot Spread :: Pondering Pentacles

During the month of April, I’ll be putting out lots of business content! Pondering Pentacles is a series where I talk all about feeling good through your work. I’m not here to teach you how to gain a jillion followers or make a million dollars. I’m here to talk about cultivating a business that feels like an authentic expression of yourself. Creativity, connection, and all kinds of magical business lessons: that’s what this series is all about.

It probably won’t surprise you at all to hear that tarot is the first thing I turn to when I need clarity surrounding my business. I’ve had some magical business aha moments, bursts of clarity and hits of inspiration all thanks to pulling cards.

I’ve just created this Business Energetic Snapshot tarot spread, and I’m sharing it here! If you are a fellow creative entrepreneur, I think you may find this a versatile spread for looking at the overall energy going on in your business. Grab your cards and give it a try!

Above, you’ll see an overview of what this spread looks like. Below, I’ll share some of the insights I gained from my own reading.

I’m using the Lumina Tarot for my reading.

The Queen of Cups was drawn to represent the overall energy currently at work in my business. I was happy to see this card here as I consider it one of my main significators! The word that came to my mind when I saw this card is “generosity.” I have been giving so much to my business lately – I’m putting out even more content than usual in April, and it feels like I’m openly flowing in my business.

This card also affirmed that my intuitive, right-brained watery side is a major influence in my business right now. My natural style is quite watery indeed (I’m a Cancer) and so letting these influences come through feels true to who I am. This is allowing me to bring my genuine Self to the table in my business, and hopefully that fluid authenticity is being felt by my clients and readers.

Let’s consider what ISN’T working right now in my business with the Maiden of Wands. This was a funny card to see here, as I’ve been thinking a lot lately about the concept of originality. This is especially relevant as I’ve embarked on a month of talking about business when I know this is something HEAPS of other people already talk about. But this card is reminding me right now that fixating on being “original” isn’t working for me. This throws back to some of the messages I received from the previous card. Focusing on being original isn’t that important right now. Instead, focusing on being AUTHENTIC is the key.

The Fool shows what IS working right now in my business. Wow, once again, I’m seeing a message here about forgetting about the damn crowd and being true to my unfiltered, wild and free self. I have gone through phases in the past in which I overdose on other people’s opinions of what my business should look like. But no more, baby! In fact, I have been making a conscious effort to spend LESS time digesting other people’s opinions. Especially as I talk about business content this month, I want to make sure that what I say is truly coming from MY perspective. To do so, I’m flinging myself into the blank-slate energy of the Fool.

It’s sometimes hard for us to see our own strengths, that is why this spread contains a card to represent untapped strengths. A lot of the cards in my spread have been about ethereal ideas of authenticity and fluidity, so it’s nice to see the Eight of Pentacles digging me back into reality here. It’s one thing for me to harbor these fancy ideas about creativity and fluidity – but it’s another thing for me to, well, DO THE DAMN WORK! This is a card that is near and dear to my heart, because I do sometimes slip into being more of a dreamer than a doer. The Eight of Pentacles is reminding me to tap into my ability to take all of these magical concepts and channel them into something real and useful. That’s exactly what I’m doing with this blog post, so this is a good start.

As I close out the reading, the Five of Pentacles gives advice on my next steps. This is another card that gives a sort of slap in the face, bringing me into the very real, material realm. When I saw this card here, I knew it was telling me that it is important to balance my material wealth and my spiritual wealth. The truth is that inspiration and authenticity don’t pay the bills. But on the other hand, money and wealth don’t necessarily create a breeding ground for a truly joyful life. This is the constant journey of the soul-centered entrepreneur: creating a business that is financially solid AND spiritually nourishing. This card asks me to prioritize BOTH of those aspects as I move forward from here.

It’s okay to be a slow growing chicken in your business! :: Pondering Pentacles

I’m soooo excited to announce that during April, my blog will be focused on BUSINESS TALK. This is a new series I call Pondering Pentacles. I’ll be delving into the nooks and crannies of being a soul-based business owner, and if you’re a fellow entrepreneur I hope you’ll join! I’m not a business expert or guru (not even close). But I do enjoy talking shop, and I hope that some of what I have to say resonates with you.

You guys…there’s something strange that happens to some of us when we start a business. I know, because it kind of happened to me.

We want to grow really big, really fast, at a pace that may not actually be healthy.

This video was originally a spiel that I gave on Periscope (follow me there if you use the app: @carriemallon). But I think this topic is so damn important that I saved the broadcast to share here.

You don’t need to be a quickly growing chicken in your business. Watch the video and this whole chicken metaphor will make total sense, ha!

This topic was inspired by a conversation I had with my amazing business running buddy, Kelly-Ann Maddox. Make sure to read her thoughts on business growth here!

Here’s to embracing your inner slow growing chicken! Make sure to follow along with the Pondering Pentacles content throughout the month. Leave me a comment if you have questions, thoughts or specific topics you’d like me to address.
