The Spacious Tarot updates, April 2019
It’s about time for another update on the status of the deck I’m creating with Annie Ruygt, isn’t it?!
Even though I’ve been posting pretty regularly on the deck’s Instagram page, it’s been quite a while since the last blog post. And just in case you missed it over on Instagram, I have HUGE NEWS to share today.
The Spacious Tarot Kickstarter will launch June 21, 2019!
The summer solstice seems like a perfect time to do this. There’s a radiant energy around the solstice and I think that dovetails perfectly with the magical vibe of our deck. The Kickstarter campaign will probably last around 30 days, but there juuuuuuussssttt might be a special early bird price for the first few backers!
Mark your calendars! Tell your friends! The date might seem far away, but I think it’s going to arrive before we know it. Annie and I still have a fair amount of work to do in the mean time. Annie is almost done with first draft illustrations but we still have revisions and touch-ups in the pipeline. I’m still writing the guidebook as well as communicating with printers and figuring out how structure the Kickstarter campaign.
And of course, we both have other projects and full lives. Annie’s traveling right now (check out her Instagram for a peek at her adventures!) and I’ve had some family stuff going on. It’s a lot, but this deck is really important to both of us. It’s an absolute passion project. We are so excited to have a Kickstarter launch date finalized!
It will be so amazing to see the deck professionally printed! All the photos I’ve been sharing online are basic prints I did at the UPS store. The cards are going to look 10x more amazing when the deck is done! Here are a few more nerdy printing details, in case you’re interested in this kind of thing! There is a slight chance some of this might change, but this is the plan so far:
-the deck will be printed on 100% post-consumer recycled paper
-the cardstock will have a matte finish and slightly rounded edges
-the images will be borderless
-the box will have an attached lid that flips open (similar to the box of the Prisma Visions Tarot) and the guidebook will sit in the box right on top of the cards
So there you have it! June 21 is the big day. I’m so excited, and also nervous, but mostly excited. It’s happening! Thank you so much to every person who has shown us support so far. It’s amazing seeing that other people are enthusiastic about our deck! We’ve put so much love and intention into this project and we are already beyond thrilled with the way it has been received.

Breaking the Wheel tarot spread
I arrived very late to the Game of Thrones party – I binged the entire show starting in February and got caught up just in time to watch the premiere of the final season. I’ll try to keep this relatively spoiler-free, but I had to mention the show as it was the inspiration for the tarot spread I’m going to share with you here today.
There’s a particular line from the show I keep thinking about. In a conversation with Tyrion, Daenerys talks about how the same ‘wheel’ keeps turning in Westeros. The wheel that she speaks of is the neverending quest for power. One ruler makes it to the top, the wheel turns, another ruler is now at the summit, and so the cycle goes on…and on…and on. Dany tells Tyrion that she doesn’t want to stop the wheel. She wants to BREAK the wheel.
I will spare you my anaylsis of what this means in the context of the show and move on to how this concept has inspired me to create a tarot spread. I really resonate with the idea of ‘breaking the wheel.’ We all get stuck in destructive cycles. Maybe your ‘wheel’ is a behavior pattern you keep enating, a relationship dynamic that keeps spiraling, or a routine that is no longer serving you. Breaking the wheel means moving into a new paradigm. It isn’t an easy thing to do. Once a wheel is in motion, it is likely to stay in motion. Stopping a wheel is tricky enough, but breaking it? Well. That’s quite the task!
If you currently feel like you’re riding some type of wheel and you want to break the damn thing once and for all, perhaps this spread can give you some insights to consider. I did it for myself today and I got a lot of juicy goodness out of it. Give it a go and see what turns up!
Some notes on the spread positions: card one offers additional clarification about what the wheel actually is. Even if you go into the spread having a good idea of what kind of cycle you’re dealing with, this card may help you uncover the deeper implications.
The second card shows internal factors upholding the wheel. This is where you can examine what is within your personal power: what choices are you making that keep the wheel in motion? What energy are you bringing to perpetuate the spinning of the wheel?
Card three, on the other hand, speaks to external factors. This is important because some cycles we get caught in are not entirely of our own making. Societal forces and other circumstances outside of your direct control may be at work, and it’s helpful to be aware of those.
With card four, you consider what purpose the wheel has served. There’s a reason you found yourself in this cycle, and this card may illuminate the lessons you’ve been tasked with learning here.
Finally, cards five and six give some advice and insight on how to actually BREAK THE WHEEL. It may not be easy, but it can be done – and these cards will help you chart a course forward.
If you do try this spread, you’re welcome to leave a comment or tag me on Instagram and let me know how it goes! Bonus points if you happen to have the Game of Thrones tarot deck and use it for this spread, haha! Now that I’ve watched the show I may need to add that one to my wishlist (I totally called Melisandre as the High Priestess and Cersei as the Queen of Swords).

Synchronistic greetings from the Luminous Void
Hello! It’s your friendly neighborhood Carrie, emerging from the shadows. I’ve been neglectful of the blog and newsletter, and I regret this. Spending time here and connecting to you in this way is very valuable to me. I want to do a better job of honoring that going forward.
The main reason I’ve been MIA is I’ve got a lot of other things competing for my brain power lately. I’m writing the guidebook and researching printing for The Spacious Tarot, plus there’s been a minor shit storm of events happening at the same time in my personal life. Everything is okay, and I have many reasons to be grateful, but it’s felt like a lot to navigate. I’m always a pretty tender person (INFP, empath life) and sometimes I get overwhelmed not by any one thing in particular, but just by LIFE. You know? LIFE is a lot.
But I’ve also been finding new levels of strength and resilience within myself lately. Anxiety has crept in a few times, but I’ve doubled down on self-love and introspection and reminding myself to carve out non-negotiable time for the practices that anchor me. Lately, this has meant lots of hot baths (with epsom salt, baking soda and essential oils) and yoga sessions (Yoga With Adriene has been a godsend).
Anyhow, I wanted to re-connect with the blog and newsletter today but wasn’t sure what to talk about. I was pondering this and pacing around my office when The Luminous Void tarot caught my eye. This is one of the newer decks I’ve received and it sure is a quirky thing. I have a lot of decks and I can honestly say this is one of a kind. I will be totally honest – some of the imagery is almost too weird for me (and I have an unusually high weirdness tolerance) but it’s also really fascinating.
I’ll post a full review of the deck in the future, but for today I thought I’d offer another mini reading for you. I’ve done this a couple of times over the past few months in video format. Today we’ll try written format.
If you’d like to participate, take a moment to settle in wherever you are. Maybe take a deep breath in through your nose, out through your mouth. Allow yourself a moment to release distractions and be present. When you are ready, pick a number: one or two. Then scroll down to find your card and message.
For those who picked card one:
You have the Page of Swords. Perhaps it is necessary to remind yourself that you will not find meaningful change by being hostile towards your flaws. You will not grow by cutting yourself down.
Consider that you might be better served by taking a neutral approach. It is possible to observe where you have room for improvement without tearing yourself apart. It is possible to acknowledge where you need further knowledge without presuming your current self to be ignorant.
Most importantly, you must cultivate an unwavering belief that evolution is possible for you. The energy of the page is apt here, for as the metaphorically ‘youngest’ of the court cards, the page still has much to learn, much to experience. You are asked to align with your inner page by affirming that opportunities for expansion await you.
This is not just a woo-woo sentiment: psychologists know how strongly your beliefs about yourself impact your life. If you believe that transformation is always possible, you will find endless opportunities to transform. If you believe that you have hit a dead end, you will find evidence to support that belief. Remind yourself that you can actively choose which of these belief systems to work with.
For those who picked card two:
You have the Page of Cups. Remember that the realm of imagination and play and dreams is just as important to your well-being as the realm of tangible reality. Making art or communing with the moon or performing rituals is just as valuable as spending time doing something society would deem “more productive.”
You may find yourself craving a more magical connection with this world, with yourself. This card reflects the part of you that has never been hurt by life, the part of you that never learned to cut yourself off from the pure magic of your existence. That part of you is always somewhere deep within you, and perhaps now is a time to bring your inner Page of Cups to the surface.
Especially when you are busy or when you experience resistance, it is essential to allow yourself to spend time in the realm of imagination. Put some time on your calendar to follow your fancy. This might look like reading a fairy tale, or walking in the rain, or simply immersing yourself in your fantasies.
Let yourself strip away any layers of stress, debris and external conditioning that are wearing you down. There is an invitation to buoyancy here, a return to trust. You are held and supported, just as the Page in this image is held by the cup. Affirm that it is safe for you to dream, it is okay for you to wander. It is essential for you to experience pure, undiluted magic.
~~~
I hope you found something in your message that resonates. Thank you for being here. I am sending you many good wishes and lots of encouragement! Until we meet again,
Embrace, Erase, Face
Hardly a day goes by that I’m not shuffling a pack of cards. Tarot is a central part of my life, obviously! Even so, it has actually been quite a while since I’ve done a spread for myself. I still do a daily draw for myself, but that just involves pulling one card and quickly jotting down a sentence about how it might apply to my day.
This is totally normal, of course. Many seasoned tarot readers notice that their relationship with the cards ebbs and flows. Sometimes we feel we need more frequent, in-depth spreads. Other times we sense it’s okay to let some time pass between reading sessions.
Usually I have a pretty good feel for this and know intuitively when I’m due for a more in-depth session with the cards. But lately I’ve been so go, go, go that I didn’t realize how much I needed a reading until I stumbled upon the three card spread I’m going to share with you here. The spread is credited to @owlandbonestarot and the positions are Embrace, Erace, Face. When I saw this spread it hit me right in the gut and I said out loud “ooh, I NEED TO DO THIS.” So here I am, with the Fountain Tarot next to me. I’m going to give this spread a go for myself and notate some of the insights here.
EMBRACE: Nine of Coins | ERASE: Four of Cups | FACE: Six of Wands
Immediately, the Nine of Coins feels like an invitation to embrace all the growth I’ve experienced lately. I definitely have a tendency to be self-depracating. Even when I’m making real improvements and generally doing well at life, I can get mired down by beliefs that all my progress is a farce and I am actually an epic failure. It’s a shadowy tendency that I’ve become more and more aware of over time, but there’s still work to do here.
Just last week I found myself breaking down in tears because of the sense that I’m not doing enough, that I’m failing, that I suck at life. Luckily my husband and my dog were there to remind me of my value and bring me back to center. But being in that shadowy place is not a healthy thing for me, and this card is a reminder of that truth.
I need to embrace that I’m doing just fine. And perhaps even more than that – perhaps I am doing great. How would it feel to believe that? How would it feel to take ownership for how far I’ve come? What might my experience look like if I learned to tame these shadowy beliefs, as the woman in the card has tamed the falcon?
As the suit of coins is associated with the mundane realm, this card also invites me to acknowledge evidence of my progress. Sort of a confirmation bias thing: if I’m looking for evidence that I’m a failure, I’ll find it. But on the other hand, if I choose to actively embrace the evidence that I’m doing well, I’ll find that instead. This isn’t to say I should ignore the real areas of improvement that may be available to me, but it does seem to indicate that I need to give myself a lot more credit for all the ways in which I’m growing and improving.
The Four of Cups in the erase position is an interesting card to see here. This is one of the more complex tarot cards for me – I view it in so many different ways depending on context, intuition and so on. One of the keywords I often see given to this card is apathy. Although I do not always view the Four of Cups in this way, that’s what it feels like for me here in this spread.
I am asked to erase apathy, because apathy gets me nowhere. Apathy prevents me from taking the constructive advice of the previous card. Apathy lets me stay in the comfortable (but glum) groove of self-deprecation. Then the question becomes, how the bloody hell do I erase apathy? I see some advice on that front coming forward in the next card.
I am asked to face the Six of Wands, and this card hit me in the gut the second I saw it show up in the spread. I get a sense here of excitement. The person on this card looks completely swept up in joy. They are not holding themselves back from this experience, they are giving in to the joy, letting themselves be carried by it.
This is why the Six of Wands hit me in the gut: I do sometimes resist letting myself really RIDE waves of joy. When good things start happening, I have a tendency to (unconsciously) slam on the energetic brakes. I described the Four of Cups as glum, but comfortable. There is certainly part of me which would rather stay in a glum but comfortable place than let myself be swept up in the rhythms of joy. Those rhythms may be more enticing than the glum place, but they aren’t as comfortable because they are unknown, they are outside of old patterns and comfort zones.
Perhaps this is why I’m asked to erase those old, comfortable but glum ways of being. Maybe I needed them for a time. Maybe they did not exist because of my shortcomings, but because of some deep seated need of my psyche. But it feels like I have now transcended that need, and I am now asked to face something different. Something brighter and more expansive. I need to be patient with the scared part of myself that would rather stay put. I need to invite her into the adventure and convince her that it is safe to face happiness, it is safe to exist in a different way.
Hmm. This is getting into some deep shit. Suffice it to say, I think it’s a universal spiritual conundrum: being resistant to embracing joy, because something ‘bad’ might happen. So the weariness of an imagined and as yet completely fictional ‘bad thing’ prevents us from the thrill of enjoying the ride. Yep.
Some of the messages I’m getting here are applicable as I work on The Spacious Tarot, the deck I’m creating with my friend Annie Ruygt. Even though it has been going well and I have every reason to believe it will continue to go well, I have had a few freak out moments over it. I probably haven’t let myself really give way to the joy of this project because I get stuck in old blah energies. Time to let myself face forward and get swept up in goodness!
This is one of those spreads I’ll be thinking about for a while. Also, I love the spread positions here! And if it seems interesting to you, I encourage you to give this spread a go for yourself. I got a lot out of it and what I shared here is really only scratching the surface of what this spread has led me to consider. It’s been a while since I encountered a new three card spread that felt really exciting, but this one is fantastic – shoutout again to Owl and Bones Tarot!
Speaking of tarot readings and the deck I’m working on, I’ll soon be taking a break from client readings to focus on writing the deck’s guidebook. If you’ve been thinking about getting a reading with me, now’s a good time to book. I’ll be putting my services on pause at the end of this week!
Eight reasons to go social media free for 30 days
I have to say, I feel better today than I have for a long time. There are a few reasons: The Spacious Tarot is going well*. February is finally drawing to an end, which means Pisces season is upon us (don’t let the door hit you on the way out, Aquarius season!). Spring isn’t too far away. I’ve also been making an effort to eat more vegetables (sitting here with a belly full of broccoli and kale as we speak) and I’m getting back into running, I just started training for a half marathon.
So these are all reasons I feel better today. But there is another HUGE reason I feel great: I’m on a thirty day social media break (*tending the deck’s Instagram page is actually the one exception to this). I’m calling it a social media break, but I’m actually trying to use my smart phone as little as possible altogether.
I’m a little surprised by how good I feel, especially considering how much resistance I had to taking this break in the first place. My intuition – and my logic, for that matter – have been telling me for ages that this would be a good idea, but resistance kept winning. The tricky thing about resistance is it can bring up some very good points. A lot of the arguments resistance made for staying on social media were quite compelling. But I run a business! I need to be on social media for that. And it’s so good for staying connected with friends! And…and…and…
But ultimately, when you know something is right for you, you have to do it no matter what resistance tells you.
It reminds me of the Eight of Cups. Something I often notate about that card is that, at least in the Waite-Smith version, the person is walking away from the cups even though the cups are not broken. Sometimes there are aspects of a situation that are still good, that are still fulfilling on some level. But we still have the deeper sense that we need to walk away in order to find greater meaning. That’s where I’m at with social media right now.
Below, I’m going to share eight reasons I’ve decided to take this break. However, I want to make it clear to anyone reading this that you have to do what is right for you. This is what is right for me right now. Maybe you have a healthy and meaningful relationship with social media, that is great. I’m not trying to convince anyone else to take a break, I’m just sharing my perspectives. Perhaps some of them will resonate with you, perhaps not.
To recalibrate my brain
I have had an alarming amount of brain fog in recent years, and when I trace it back I realize it intensified around the time I got my first smart phone in 2014. When I sit down to work on in-depth projects these days, my brain simply does not want to focus. It has become too accustomed to the constant, ever-changing stimuli that social media feeds provide.
A growing body of research affirms what many of us know to be true from our lived experience: social media just isn’t that great for your brain. Social media has been shown to disrupt your ability to focus, increases stress hormones, and is correlated to increased anxiety.
I miss reading a book or writing an essay or thinking about the meaning of life without being interrupted by my brain’s urge to stop what I’m doing and check what’s happening on a screen. I want to reclaim my ability to think deeply and focus on one thing at a time. I want to create some magical mental space and fill that space only with things that are meaningful.
To explore what else my time could be used for
Do you know what would be terrifying to me? A log of how much time I’ve spent on Instagram (or Reddit, or YouTube, and so on). The hours and days sometimes feel long, as though there are great swathes of time to be filled with scrolling and clicking. But in reality, life is short. How much of my precious time on this earth have I spent doing dumb shit on my phone? Probably way too much.
There are so many things I want to do in this lifetime that I have not done. I want to write more poetry. I want to write a book. I want to be aware of my surroundings, whatever they may be, instead of distracting myself with an omni-present screen. I want to do so many things that I tell myself I don’t have time for. Yet how much time do I manage to spend scrolling through my phone? Something isn’t quite adding up here.
To embrace boredom
On the surface, it may seem like a good thing that technology has nearly eradicated boredom. Who wants to be bored? Being bored is boring! But you know what? I MISS BEING BORED. Here are things I used to do when I was bored:Daydream. People watch. Stare out a window. Think. Call a friend and make plans.
I still do many of those things when I’m bored, but can you guess the number one thing I do when I’m bored these days? Check my blasted phone. A little boredom is a good thing. My immediate reaction to boredom should not be to drown it out, it should be to embrace it. Curiosity is born out of boredom. Creativity is born out of boredom. Boredom can and should be a gift, a friend, a fertile ground to grow from.
To actually be social
As a collective, we are theoretically more connected than ever, yet we are also more lonely than ever. Loneliness is at epidemic levels in our society. The reasons for this are complex and multi-faceted, but social media is one of the contributing factors.
Our brains evolved to place an incredible value on strong social connections. Our brain craves the real-world social affirmation that is conveyed from facial expressions, vocal intonations and body language. Your brain does not interpret social media interactions as actual social interactions. Clicking a heart on a screen in theory shows that someone is thinking of us, but in reality it does little to feed our inherent need for social interaction. This is why you walk away from time spent on social media still feeling lonely.
And so while I’m away from social media, I’m going to try to embrace REAL, in person social connections. This is a challenge as I’m a hermited introvert who works from home, but I’m going to make real connection a priority.
To question stories and the status quo
It’s alarming how quickly we as a society have adopted the story that our social media and smart phone usage is a normal part of life. Think about it: we consider it normal to start scrolling through your phone while having dinner with a friend. We consider it normal to walk down the street staring at a screen instead of the world around you. We consider it normal to spend upwards of seven hours a day chained to an electronic device. The role smart phones play in our live have been fully integrated into the status quo.
Sometimes I forget what a new phenomenon this is. As I mentioned before, I didn’t have a smart phone until 2014. That’s less than five years. But in that five years, my life has radically altered without me making the conscious choice to radically alter it. That’s one of the most concerning things to me: that we’ve adopted this story that smart phone usage is normal without really DECIDING to adopt this story. It just sort of happened, and now here we are. Whoopsie!
Remember: stories are stories. We get to decide how to tell them. We can question them. We can rewrite them.
I am a big believer in making conscious choices, not drifting through life on autopilot. When my thirty day break is over, I’m planning to be very intentional about how I decide to re-integrate social media into my life. One of my biggest inspiration here is Cal Newport’s theory of digital minimalism. He suggests a thirty day de-clutter followed by a careful consideration of which services to bring back in, and that’s what I’m doing. I AM planning to use Instagram again, but I’m going to have a lot more boundaries and intentions around how I use it!
To protect my energy
I identify as an empath. This means I am extra-sensitive to other people’s feeling states. In many ways, this is a gift – it’s part of why I am a good tarot reader. But there are challenges that come along with being an empath. Although I am fairly adept at protecting my energy, sometimes social media catches me off guard. If I come across a post which is charged with a particular emotion, that emotion can activate within me. This means that after I use social media I often feel full of energetic gunk. I know how to “clean” this gunk, but it is a process.
Even people who are not empaths end up absorbing other people’s stuff via social media. So many people I talk to describe feeling jealous, angry, irritated or just plain weird after scrolling through their feeds. Social media really can be very taxing on your energy, even if you’ve got all the black tourmaline in the world and have conjured a magnificent shield of white light!
To stop being a product
I’m not a huge fan of many things about this period of “late capitalism” we find ourselves living in today. Facebook, who also owns Instagram, is one of the biggest companies on the planet. In fact, Facebook is now more valuable than Exxon. We often talk about “using social media” but the truth is that social media is using us. YOU are the product. Your attention is what social media is selling. Social media is designed to be psychologically manipulative, encouraging you to spend as much time as possible scrolling. Your attention is your most precious, sacred resource. Social media exploits your most precious, sacred resource and pockets hoards of money in return. And what are you getting out of all this again?
To continue on a path that has already served me
I used to be an avid Facebook user. I joined way back when you had to have a college email address and used it for over ten years. Ultimately, I decided to delete my account a year ago. Making the choice to get off Facebook was HUGE for me. I went back and forth about that decision for at least a year before I took the plunge. This is because despite all my criticism here, I am aware of the plus side of social media. I’ve experienced many benefits from social media. I’ve met new friends. Stayed in touch with old friends. Saw pictures of cute cats and dogs and babies. There are certainly some very positive things about it!
I will fully admit that I do miss some of the benefits of Facebook. But ultimately, I decided the benefits I was receiving were not worth the costs. Cal Newport says that you become a maximalist by focusing on benefits more than costs. You become a digital minimalist by assessing the costs of these various technologies. Of course, we’re not necessarily talking about financial costs – social media is “free” – but all of the criticisms I laid out above are things I consider costs.
And all of the resistance I had about getting off Facebook turned out to be not that big of a deal. I was worried about missing event invites, but now my friends know to text or call me to keep me in the loop. I thought I’d miss seeing updates on people’s lives, but I use alternate ways to stay in touch with the friends I’m actually close with, and I don’t miss seeing that some random person I knew in high school and haven’t talked to in person for 15 years painted their garage. I was especially worried about discontinuing my business Facebook page, but I had a more profitable year than ever.
Overall, getting off Facebook has been AMAZING for me. My mental health has improved. My faith in humanity has increased. I feel more expansive. It turns out life outside of the box is pretty damn good! If you are interested in getting off Facebook but have a list of excuses, I promise you, you can do it if you really want to. Any excuse you have can be worked around, but only if it’s really important to you. I was very attached to my excuses for a very long time. It’s a harsh truth, but an important truth: the only way we ever make progress in life is if our desire for transformation eclipses our urge to cling to excuses.
In conclusion…
As I mentioned earlier, maybe you already have a healthy relationship with social media. Maybe you have no need to reconsider the way you use technology. If so, that’s awesome! The last thing I want to do is sound preachy here. I don’t believe in one size fits all approaches. I believe in looking at things with nuance. My message is not “social media is bad for everyone.” Instead, it’s “social media is problematic for me (and many people I talk to) so here are some thoughts on that.” I know this is a charged topic, so if you have thoughts to share please feel free to comment! I think this is an interesting conversation to have, and one that we’ll continue to have as a society for many years to come.
A free reading for you
Let’s try something different today!
For the latter part of 2018, I was regularly offering free readings each Tuesday on my Instagram stories (Tarot Tuesday, w00t w00t!). Sometimes I opened up the floor for people to send in questions, other times I’d offer readings for the collective. Although people seemed to like this (and I enjoyed doing it!) lately I’ve been feeling like I’m putting too much energy into social media and that maaaaybe that energy would be better spent elsewhere.
And so today, I’m offering a free mini-reading that will be sent to my mailing list as well as posted here on my blog! I’ve recorded three mini-readings, about five minutes in length. To participate, take a moment to center yourself and connect with your breath. Trusting your intuition, pick a number: one, two, or three. When you are ready, scroll down and listen to the reading that correlates with your number.
The Spacious Tarot updates, January 2019
The first thing I want to say is THANK YOU to every single person who has expressed excitement about The Spacious Tarot, the deck I’m creating with Annie Ruygt. I’m not sure how to say this without sounding cliche, but it’s the truth from our hearts: your encouraging comments and emails mean SO MUCH to us. We are very grateful! We knew all along we were creating a deck that would speak to us, but for so long it was something that we were working on in solitude. It is incredible to finally be sharing the deck’s progress and connecting with YOU on the deck’s Instagram page, @thespacioustarot.
It’s been two months since I put up the post introducing the deck, so I figured it’s about time to share some updates! Let’s start with THE question on everyone’s mind… when is this deck coming out?!
The answer, for now, is we still don’t know! I wish I had a date for you already, but I promise we will be shouting it from the rooftops once we know. As I’m writing this, we have about 32 cards which are done-ish. Of course since there are 78 cards in a tarot deck, this means we’re not quite halfway finished with the illustrations. Annie deserves a HUGE shout out here – she is bringing these images to life with so much beauty and clarity, and that is NOT a small task!
Most of the remaining cards are already sketched and waiting in the pipeline to be finalized. But we also have a decent sized handful of cards that don’t yet have a finalized concept. In other words, creating a tarot deck is a huge frickin’ project! We’re trying to keep up the momentum, but we also keep returning to the title of our deck as a touchstone: the deck is spacious, and the creation process has to be spacious as well. I think you can sense the calm, centered approach we are putting into this deck when you look at the cards that we’ve shown so far. We want to get the deck out as soon as possible, but as with anything meaningful in life, it will take how long it takes.
I’m pleased we are getting asked about the release date so frequently because it means you’re as eager as we are to have the finished deck in your hands! The goal is still to have the deck out this year and I’m cautiously optimistic about that goal. However, once we finish the illustrations there are still so many complicated factors we’ll have to deal with: finding a printer, figuring out shipping, all of the details that go into creating a tarot deck independently. It’s daunting, but I trust that we’ll figure it out eventually.
If you are looking forward to this deck, keep in mind that there will eventually be a Kickstarter. When we get to this point, your support will be crucial: we literally will not be able to print and distribute this deck without reaching our crowdfunding goal. So stay excited! Tell your friends about the deck! And keep an eye on my blog and the deck’s Instagram account for updates.
To round out this post, let’s take a look at the WORLD PREMIERE of two new cards from the Spacious Tarot. First up, Justice.
This was one of the major arcana concepts that took the longest to come forward. I went back and forth with a few different designs, and Annie even completed a final version of a previous concept, but it didn’t feel quite right. Annie deserves another huge shout out here for putting up with me! When this idea came to me, it felt like an immediate YES. It’s a non-traditional way to show the energy of this card, but I think it fits right in with the vibe of our deck. I’ll be curious to see what other people think about this depiction.
And speaking of non-traditional depictions… have a look at our Hanged Man.
The Hanged Man is one of the cards I’ve been the most nervous to debut (tied with the Emperor). This depiction will probably be quite baffling to some, but maybe other people will love it as much as I do. The Spacious Tarot is meant to invite you into the energy of each card, and this card certainly invites you into a different perspective, which feels fitting to me as the Hanged Man is strongly associated with alternate perspectives. Some of you might recognize that this scene is largely inspired by the famous NASA photo ‘Earthrise.’
And since I mentioned this card above, just in case you haven’t yet seen it on Instagram, here is our Emperor:
That’s it for now! I will be back with more updates before too long. Again, I would like to thank you so much for being here and supporting us on this journey. Sending so much love!
