Ace of Cups Tarot Card Meanings in the Wild Unknown
Like many cards in the Wild Unknown, the image on the Ace of Cups is simple but evocative. A classy, elegant goblet resides in the center of the card. The background fills the card with a blue glow and brings to mind stained glass, or possibly fish scales. A splash of warm yellow and orange hover above the glass, as though the goblet contains multitudes of energy.
As the introduction to the suit of cups, this ace sets the stage for what we will encounter as the suit unfolds. The Wild Unknown offers the keyword “love’s beginnings” for this card. In my perspective, though, cups are the watery suit of the WHOLE emotional realm. Throughout this suit we will see experiences of friendship and love, but we’ll also encounter the more difficult emotional states such as loneliness and grief.
The Ace of Cups is a vessel containing the potential for all emotional states. The varied components of the human emotional landscape are brewing in this goblet, and soon we will explore them in depth as they pour out through the numbered cards.
Ace of Cups Tarot Card Meanings in General

In many decks, the Ace of Cups shows a hand extended, palm out, holding a cup. Water is often overflowing from within the cup, suggesting the depth of emotional energy present in this card. Emotions are flowing freely, unburdened by repression. After all, this state of flowing freely is how emotional energy stays healthy.
The fact that the hand is depicted in a palm-up position is worth mentioning as well. As opposed to grasping the cup, the hand receives the cup. This is a reminder that the suit of cups energy is often considered to be a receptive energy.
Pictured above is the Ace of Cups from my deck, the Spacious Tarot (alongside the Water card from its Expansion Pack).
In a reading
The Ace of Cups can signify the onset of feeling-based experiences. This card can remind you to open your heart, to allow your emotional energy to move freely. Allow yourself to feel whatever it is that you are feeling without labeling it as ‘good’ or ‘bad.’ This card often appears when we need to proceed with compassion and respect the signals our feelings are giving us.
A Bad Ass Manifesto for the Seekers & Healers

We are seekers. We seek expansion, freedom, connection. We plunge the depths of meaning beyond the surface. We are more interested in questions than answers. Our curiosity is divinely ordained. We honor our inherent wholeness even as we seek ever-increasing ways to live a brave, open-hearted life.
We are healers. Our healing comes in many shapes: we may be teachers, engineers, parents, tarot readers, or artists, among other guises. We are called to bring laughter, comfort, encouragement, recovery and wholeness to this planet and its inhabitants. We heal through bold acts of revolution and through quiet acts of kindness.
We walk varied paths, but we share a common destiny: to activate treasures within and be amplifiers of light.

I’ve shuffled the Wild Unknown tarot & asked to be guided to the cards and messages that might resonate with us. As I do with my personalized Bad Ass Manifesto readings, I’ve written this in first person. If it resonates with you, you can use this as an affirmation. May the following passages crack open the bad-ass healer & seeker that you are!
I have the courage and zeal to forge my own path. I do not shimmy away from owning what I am here to do. I trust myself to take the next step, no matter how small, with conviction. I do not buy into limiting thoughts. I do not play small. I’m here to live out loud. I may not have all the answers right away, but I have the determination to figure it out.
I am my own strongest ally. I provide a consistent, steady and strong companionship to myself. I stand behind my own decisions and actions. I trust myself, I take pride in my accomplishments. I willingly activate my powers because the world needs what I’ve got.
I give approximately zero fucks what anyone thinks of me – I don’t have time for that, I’ve got work to do.
(Tweet this)
I accept that I will make mistakes and miscalculations as I progress. I do not let these derail me for long. I do not waste too much energy complaining or regretting. While I do not dismiss my missteps, I know they do not define me. I do not stay stuck in the mud for long, I re-orient myself time and time again to face forward and onward.
I am unabashedly wise. Within me soars the wisdom of the cosmos, yet I am always learning. I respect my powers of observation and use them to hone my gifts. I do not need to force my viewpoints upon others. Rather, I serve as a beacon to those who would most resonate with my message. I treat all those I encounter with courtesy. I have great respect for my roles as both student and teacher.
I look within myself to assess my skills and abilities. I am fucking SMART! I have wits and intelligence and I see how I can utilize them as I do my day to day thang. As I unlock greater depths of wisdom, I excavate treasure troves of insights. I examine my own experiences and thoughts.
I cultivate my most useful wisdom and share it in my own unique way.
(Tweet this)
I am realistic, but optimistic. I ask for guidance, and in turn, I serve as a guide to others. I am open to outside opinions and perspectives, but they do not tarnish my zeal. Ultimately, I trust my internal wisdom as I do good in the world.
I do not expect things to always be easy, floaty, light. I have been through the thickets of doubt, sorrow, confusion, numbness. But I have risen above, and I will rise above again. I choose to follow inspiration, not resistance. I choose to explore the possibilities, the vastness of beauty within me, within my planet, within my fellow lifeforms. I seek the things that lift me up, and I seek to uplift others. The world has enough cynics, I choose to be a believer.
I aspire to fully realize the powers of my self, but I am also led my a higher power. I trust that my life is unfolding as it should. I trust that I am being led to the people, events and experiences that will mold my journey in the most beautiful way. I do not need to rush in order to soar. As I continue to unfold, I am honored to serve as a point of inspiration for others.
It is safe for me to expand into higher and higher landscapes as I seek and heal.
(Tweet this)
Sometimes in order to get the most done, I remain still. Sometimes I must hustle, launching myself and my message into the world. Other times I must remain quiet and let my spirit percolate. I am rooted in the world of people, places and things, but I also inhabit a mystical realm of wordless messages and magic.
I respect the powers of logic, but know that they can only get me so far. I consciously use the power of dreams, signs, and synchronicity. I am always in communications with my guides, the universe, spirit. As I listen to the signals I am given, I continue to blend the magical and the mundane. My intuition is a powerhouse, and I turn to it as I navigate my wild and wonderful path.
I am a seeker. I am a healer. I do not need permission. I do not need approval.
(Tweet this)
I am here for the messy process of coming alive, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. I am now ready to go forward and be the bad ass that I am!

Intuitive Tag (video!)

Oh my goodness! A VIDEO! Whee! I haven’t made one of these in a while. I was recently tagged by the rad Vix from New Age Hipster for the Intuitive Tag. This has been making the rounds on YouTube and now I am a part of the legacy.
Watch and listen to hear me ramble about paranormal experiences, crystals, elements and other wonders.
I didn’t tag anyone in particular because I kind of forgot to do so. But if you haven’t yet participated and think this looks like fun: TAG, you’re it!

Father of Wands Tarot Card Meanings in the Wild Unknown
If you thought the Mother of Wands stood her ground, wait until you meet the Father! He is someone you do not mess around with. He knows his domain, and he has complete confidence in his role as the master of this territory. He is the boss here, and in both subtle ways and bold, he’ll assert this belief.
The background of the card is black, which adds to the dominance of the snake. He stands out as a bold, exuberant character. He isn’t afraid of the night, or anything else. A bolt of pure red and orange descends. These are the colors of raw power.
The bolt also adds a bit of drama to the card. This Father/King of Wands does have a flair for the dramatic. He enjoys entertaining, and even if he wouldn’t admit it, he likes keeping others on their toes. You’re never really sure what the Father of Wands is going to do next.
But unlike the Son of Wands, the Father does have a master plan. He’s learned a thing or two, and he doesn’t take action just for the sake of it. He takes measured but bold steps, and it isn’t hard for him to find results.
King of Wands Tarot Card Meanings in General

The wands court cards in my self-published deck The Spacious Tarot show a progression of fire. The Elder (or King) is a master of fire, he makings conjuring pyrotechnics look easy.
In theWaite-Smith tarot, the King of Wands is poised upon a throne. His seat and his robe are decorated with salamanders, a creature associated with the fire element. He leans forward in his throne as though he’s about to jump up and take part in one thing or another.
As the culmination of the court cards, the king is highly adept in working with the energy of his suit. The King of Wands knows how to take the fiery energy of wands and channel it into something productive. He sees opportunities everywhere. He’s never one to sit idly by, he always wants to be learning, doing, engaging. His pace is fast but he is not careless. He’s has honed his instincts and now trusts that they will not lead him astray.
In a reading
The Father of Wands may ask you not to shy away from your own power. What do you want to create? How can you use your hard-earned skills to make it happen? What plan feels both solid and exciting to you? The Father of Wands invites you to try out his approach to life and watch the results as they are magnetized towards you.

Mother of Wands Tarot Card Meanings in the Wild Unknown
A snake curls protectively around a nest of eggs, a wand held at an angle seems to serve as added armor. This mother is someone you wouldn’t want to mess with. Although she can be kind and warm, she is fierce and loyal, and not afraid to stand her ground.
She holds her values dear to her heart and isn’t afraid to live in a way that lines up with her moral code. She doesn’t do anything halfway – she’s in it to win it. She pours all of her love, originality and unique energy into everything she does. She is a true artist, more devoted to her craft than the son or daughter.
The background is filled with horizontal lines, colored throughout with orange and red. It gives the Mother of Wands a strong, stable energy. She is so vibrant that she almost has an energy field around her. But unlike the emanating energy of the Son of Wands, her energy is steady. She channels her energy in a more effective way.
More so than any other depiction of the Queen/Mother of Wands, this card gives me the impression of someone who holds their beliefs dearly. She’s willing to fight for what she knows is right. Even so, she knows how to have fun. She has a warm life force, a kind of palatable cheeriness that draws others to her.
Queen of Wands Tarot Card Meanings in General

The queen radiates the energy of the suit of wands from the inside out. Devotion is one of the keywords I associate with this card: she is clear about her passions and devoted to nurturing them. In The Spacious Tarot (the deck I co-created with Annie Ruygt, shown above) this card is called the Guardian of Cups and she watches over a bonfire. Others gravitate towards her inner warmth. She sets a keen example for living a creative, passionate, radiant life.
In many decks, the Queen of Wands is shown with a sunflower. This symbolizes her blossoming life force. She knows who she is and lives securely from her glowing center. She is not oblivious to the hardships of life – she is willing to stand up completely for what she believes in, even if that is risky or uncomfortable. But even so, she’s an eternal optimist, always oriented towards the good in herself, and drawing out the good in others.
In a reading
The Mother of Wands may be asking you to follow her example. Practice gratitude and protect the things that matter to you. Keep your attitude bright and good things will come your way. Live with your whole heart, be devoted to your path. You’re not here to half-ass things. Let your zest for life color everything you do!

Son of Wands Tarot Card Meanings in the Wild Unknown
The Son of Wands (titled Knight or Explorer of Wands in other decks) is a one man victory parade. He is a beacon of self-confidence and assurance. The wand he holds seems to literally be a beacon, sending out heat waves that ripple across the card. The energy is alive and vital, radiating outwards without inhibition.
The angle of his head makes him look like he’s marching with some swagger. The extended tongue just adds to this effect. If he could talk, I can almost hear him saying “I do what I want, and I do it well!” Rather or not this attitude is merited is still up for debate!
His self-confidence is admirable, but it also borders on cockiness. He stares straight ahead – he might have a plan, but he certainly doesn’t seem to have a back up plan. He’s banking on one thing working, and might not have the maturity to deal if it doesn’t.
The Son of Wands is constantly seeking new adventures. He isn’t someone to stick around when things get boring or stagnant. He’s the life of the party, he knows how to be suave (but it can be hard to tell when he’s just blowing smoke). He’s fired-up about life, and always engaged in one thing or another. His priority is following his next great adventure, but he struggles to enjoy the present moment. He’s always up for a good time – but he might be gone before you know it!
Knight of Wands Tarot Card Meanings in General

The Knights (or Explorers as they’re called in my deck, The Spacious Tarot shown above) are the metaphorical teenagers of the court cards. As such, their relationship with the energy of their suit is somewhat inconsistent. Therefore the Knight of Wands is full of enthusiasm for life, but may also be restless or easily agitated. He is willing to take risks, but sometimes those risks get him burned. He can be charming and attractive, but might not stick around when things get boring!
As a court card, the Knight of Wands can represent a specific person, an aspect of personality, or an approach to life. Consider how this card’s approach might be helpful, but also be aware of the less beneficial aspects of this energy. For more guidance on working with court cards, see this post.
In a reading
This card can suggest that you need this type of fired up, adventurous energy in your life. What feels hot to you right now? How can you dive headfirst into what lights you up? March towards excitement, but be cautious of the implications of your actions.

Daughter of Wands Tarot Card Meanings in the Wild Unknown
The court cards of the Wild Unknown bare the titles Daughter (equivalent to Pages in the Rider Waite tradition), Son (Knight), Mother (Queen) and Father (King). These titles are more in line with the natural world theme of the Wild Unknown, and I like that they are less hierarchal than the traditional titles. For a better understanding of the concept of court cards, see this post.
I’ve had some difficulty making sense of the choice to use snakes in the suit of wands. However, as I pondered this further, I began to look into snakes in the Chinese zodiac. In this system, snakes are associated with the fire element, which is in turn associated with the suit of wands. Snakes also seem powerful, forward-oriented and independent. Perhaps this is how the connection was drawn.
The Daughter of Wands is a sweetly charming character. She is coiled around a blossoming wand, her body forming a figure 8, or the lemniscate symbol (representing infinity). She looks graceful and flexible. She takes whatever suits her fancy and incorporates it into her environment.
She is colored with red and yellow, making her stand out from the harsh black background. The tip of her tail curves gracefully, giving her an artistic flair. She is a creative and original character, someone with an infinite imagination. She lives life in her own fresh, original way – she is not bound by the status quo.
There’s an innocent confidence to this card. The Daughter of Wands moves not with a cocky arrogance, but with a quiet assurance. She has sweet faith that things will work out for the best.
The wand around which she is coiled is white and bursts forth with pink flowers. This adds to my view of the daughter of wands as an artist – everything she touches bursts forth with beauty.
Page of Wands Tarot Card Meanings in General

Most decks use the title Page instead of Daughter for this card (or in The Spacious Tarot it is the Child). The Page is the onset of the court cards, and has a fresh perspective in her interactions with her suits. As such, the Page of Wands represents the part of you that is intimately connected to your own instincts.
The Page of Wands moves through the world in a creative way, not because she is trying to do so, but because she is yet unburdened by the pressure to conform. As such, she has some similarity to the Fool – both are confident, but also possibly a little naive.
In a reading
This card can remind you of your own artistic potential. Your very life is a work of art. You are being asked to step forward into something that resonates with your authentic self. You have the ability to make the world a more beautiful place. Use your charm to your advantage and cultivate a belief that you’ve got what it takes to succeed.
Eat selectively at the hodgepodge buffet of life

We live in a world jammed full of jellyfish and jet skis and telescopes and dune buggies and acrobats and con-men and cat videos and rollerblades and fashion and OH MY GOSH SO MUCH EVERYTHING.
Bountiful splendors mixed in with plentiful distractions. Stuff, things, people, options, opportunities, stimulation. Life is an endless parade, an ever-replenishing buffet of things to do and discover and experience.
You can’t have it all. You can’t taste it all. You can’t even fathom the vastness of it all.
Like any buffet, you’ve got to eat wisely at the buffet of life. You don’t want to stuff yourself full of not-so-wonderful wonder bread when you could be eating a gourmet concoction!
You have to leave some things off your plate. You have to identify the things that look tantalizing, but your gut tells you won’t give you the nutrition you need. You might be tempted to eat the things that everyone else is eating. Only continue this if YOU find your meal delicious.
There are vast options sprawled before you at this buffet. If you’re one of the lucky ones, you’ve got maaaaybe a century to nibble here. And so it is vital to eat consciously. Taste the things you really want to taste. Go out of your comfort zone and try something exotic once in a while.
What do you deeply, truly want to be doing in this life? What activities, people and interests do you want to allow onto your plate? What does genuine fulfillment look like and feel like to you? What are you currently taking from the buffet that doesn’t feel vitalizing and interesting? What can you do right now to begin eating more selectively at the hodgepodge buffet of life?
Life is a hodgepodge buffet. Load your plate only with things that are splendid for YOU.
(click to tweet this)
Life is abundant. Once you begin to get on board with this notion, the amount of abundance you see in your buffet increases. Your horizons expand, you see options. You learn to make choices from the deepest part of yourself. You learn to move past analysis paralysis and scarcity. You feel abundant, curious, selective.
This is your life. This is your buffet. This is your plate. Approach it with a seriously playful attitude of gratitude. Form a filter for the things that aren’t for you. Fill up your life with the experiences, enchantments and relationships that make you feel well and truly fulfilled.
Bon appetit!

Clarity and master-plans are overrated

A few lucky souls have crystal-clear clarity about their path. They can describe their purpose and goals with vivid details. They are sure of where they want to go, and they’ve mapped out a detailed plan to get them there.
Many of us, though, don’t have this type of gleaming assurance.
Many of us have an inkling as to what our true desires and gifts may be. But we can’t yet see how to take our vague ideas and form a bigger picture. The road ahead of us is mired in fog. We are not sure where we are going, so we’re not sure how to get there.
From the time we are kids, we are asked “what do you want to be when you grow up?” And then when we get older, we are told that to manifest a happy life, we have to have a perfect understanding of what we want. Our society places importance on planning and certainty. We envy those who seem to have it all figured out.
We wonder what’s wrong with us. We ask for signs. We read books. We meditate. We medicate. We soul-search. We eat chocolate. We wonder and wander. We begin to feel heavy-hearted because we’ve floated this far through life and still don’t have an unobscured vision of where we’re going.
A shift in perspective: having certainty isn’t necessary.
(click to tweet this)
What if we let ourselves explore the cloudiness that surrounds us one step at a time? What if we accept the mystery instead of fixating on solving it? What if we embrace our drifting? We aren’t always meant to see our entire course charted out before us.
We all have access to a complex inner guidance system. Sometimes it shines a bright beacon that pierces through blocks. Other times it seems dim, and only shows us how to shuffle our feet in a vague direction. But it is never, ever, ever, EVER extinguished. Even if you’re only getting fuzzy signals, tune in. Guidance is there, even if it’s not as specific as we may wish.
An elaborate master plan isn’t always necessary. It’s okay not to know exactly what you want. It’s okay to be unsure of precisely where you’re going. It’s okay that the edges seem frayed and fuzzy. It’s okay to only have the next week (or day, or five minutes) planned out.
We only need to see the next right step – no matter how minuscule that step may be. We only need enough illumination to see what lies directly in front of us. Once we move into that space, we can see the next small space that lies beyond. You know what you need to know.
Your path unfolds in ever-increasing patches of luminosity.

Happy Fish Classics (best of the blog, year one)

Since I launched my blog in March 2014, I have posted over 100 times. Wowza! I’ve scrawled about creativity, resistance to creativity, spirituality, existential angst, cats, business and of course…tarot. This week, I rummaged through all this material and composed a list of ten favorites. I hope you will enjoy digging into the Happy Fish highlight reel (first year edition)!
Divine Dissatisfaction :: If you are always nursing a creative ache, you might be living with the gift of divine dissatisfaction. In this post, I talk about the beauty of being simultaneously grateful for where you are while always yearning for what comes next.
Creating When You Feel Like Crap :: “But I don’t feel like it. But I’m tired. But…” If you’re like me, you’ve used these excuses once or twice (or, like, a thousand times) when you didn’t feel like working on a creative project. Here’s a no-frills response to that attitude straight from the tarot cards.
5 Steps to Desire Mapping with Tarot :: Danielle LaPorte gifted us a revolutionary concept: figure out how you want to feel, and then do the things that make you feel that way. In this post, I discussed how tarot can be used as part of the desire mapping process.
Growth Is a Spiral Process, Not a Straight Line :: Wouldn’t it be easy if growth was a tidy and narrow process? If you moved integrated lessons completely and then moved cleanly onto the next phase? The real thing looks a lot more erratic.
Frolicking Through the Major Arcana – A Map of Sorts ::
This post sweeps you into a bird’s eye view of the Major Arcana and how they illustrate human growth and spiritual development. I spent a frick-load of time on this one and I’m proud of the result!
The Loneliness of Being Human :: In this melancholy meets hopeful post, I talk about the paradoxical experience of being completely alone while also being completely connected to All That Is.
Resistance and the War of Art :: Resistance is a powerful force that wants to keep you locked in the status quo. Resistance abhors change and it will pull out all kinds of devilish tricks to keep you still. This posts delves into the mysteries of Resistance and what we can do about it.
Four Tips on Going Pro as a Tarot Reader :: I’m often approached by other brave souls thinking of “going pro” as a tarot reader. In this post I shared some advice ‘n tips for traveling this wild road.
Cheers to the first of what I hope will be many years of writing and sharing. Thank you for reading – it means more to me than you know.
(PS: I invite you to continue visiting regularly, new posts go up every Tuesday).
Peace, love and happy fish,
