A few things to accept if you want to live a creative life

    Card from the Earthbound Oracle

A few things to accept if you want to live a creative life:

  • This road can get bumpy. By living a creative life, you’ll often find yourself whacking your own path through a gnarly wood. While other people elect to take the well-marked, well-lit paths, you’ll be off in a strange wilderness of your own making. This is certainly not the easiest way to live, but it’s the most magical.
  • Fear doesn’t ever really go away. You do, however, get better at recognizing it and moving forward even if it insists on following. Anytime you venture deeper into creative living, fear will require you to gather up your strength and just keep swimming.
  • There’s always another blank page to face. No matter what you did yesterday, “what’s next” is the most important question to ask yourself. This can seem overwhelming, but if you shift your perspective you’ll see it for what it is: the incredible gift of endless possibilities.

  • Droughts are part of the package. Occasionally, you will get stuck. You will get frustrated. You will feel like you can’t tap into the flow. The more you’ve encountered these droughts, though, the more tools you’ll have to maneuver them – and you’ll always find your way back to the stream.
  • Distractions are everywhere. Procrastination, self-doubt, drama… you’ll never have to look hard to find something waiting to take your energy away from creativity. Right when you’ve willed yourself past one distraction, another will always be waiting. This is life. You’ll have to constantly remind yourself what you really want to focus on.
  • Your inner critic is going to be a giant asshole sometimes. Your inner critic will lead you to overthink what you’ve attempted, berate yourself, want to tear everything you’ve created to shreds. You’ll need to get well-acquainted with your inner critic. Accept her as part of you and work to transform her from foe to friend.
  • You’ve probably done more than you give yourself credit for. Seriously, you need to focus as much (or more) on what you HAVE accomplished as what you haven’t. Give yourself credit. Make lists of what you’ve achieved. Remember that any small creative act is worth celebrating.
  • Other people’s reactions aren’t the best gauge of your value. When you present your creative output to others, you’ll occasionally get praise. You’ll probably get some criticism as well. And you’ll often get… no reaction whatsoever. So it goes. Don’t you dare rest the worth of your creativity on someone else’s shoulders!
  • Listening to your deeper Self is wiser than listening to your ego. Your ego might want praise, money, 10k Instagram followers, etc. But what your deeper Self probably wants is expansion, expression and genuine connection. Of course, these things don’t have to be mutually exclusive, but beware of your ego telling you one will ALWAYS equate to the other.
  • The hardest, most bullshit feelings can become fuel. I don’t buy into the notion that creative people have to be tormented, suffering souls. But creative people do tend to feel things deeply. You’ll go through inner turmoil and navigate murky inner waters – but there are pearls lurking in those waves. You have the gift of extracting the wisdom in your struggles and alchemizing it into something useful, something beautiful.

  • How to Psych Yourself Up (featuring the Queen of Wands)

“I need to psych myself up for this.”

I’ve found myself saying this a lot this week. Sometimes it’s because I have to do something I’d rather not do (for example, gagging down medicine). Other times it’s because I want to work but part of me would rather zone out on the couch!

What does it mean to psych yourself up? This is a phrase we use to imply you’d like to be enthusiastic, pumped, excited and ready to go – but you need to make some adjustments to get yourself to that point.

Do you know who is already psyched up? The Queen of Wands. This bitch is fierce, courageous, energetic. She brings her a whole heart to everything. She doesn’t often need to psych herself up, because this is her natural state of being.

What can we learn from the Queen of Wands? Here are some tips I think she would she give on transforming your mentality from meh to YEAH!

    Fan your small flames.
If you search your psyche, it’s likely you’ve already got some small flames (or at least a few smoldering coals) of readiness for whatever you’re about to do. Find those small flames, and feed them energy. Remind yourself of every positive thing about this task: why do you want to do it? How will it affect the overall spectrum of your life? What good will come from getting excited and getting it done? Hone in on those answers and you’ll feel them increase from small flames to bright fires.

Fake it ’til you make it.
There’s a reason this phrase exists. Faking it until you make it doesn’t ALWAYS work, but it’s track record of success is surprisingly good. If you’re not so stoked about doing something, try ACTING like you are. What would you do if you WERE ready? How would you proceed if you DID have good mojo? Channel your inner Queen of Wands. Focus on those energies and act as though they were your reality – and before long, they can be.

    Remember the joy of productivity.
One of my favorite quotes is from Dorthy Parker: “I hate writing, but I love having written.” Ain’t it the truth? It feels so good to sit down at the end of the day and know you accomplished what you truly needed to. The next time you’re struggling to gain momentum, remind yourself of how amazing you’re going to feel once you’ve done the work. Soon you’ll be sitting pretty on your throne, just like the Queen of Wands, basking in the post-productivity glow.

    Be all in.
It has come to my attention that the internet, television, cats, family and pretty much every other thing in the world can be incredibly distracting. If you really need to get psyched up for a task, remove yourself from distractions. Unplug everything, turn off the wi-fi, and devote yourself to the task at hand. The Queen of Wands doesn’t touch anything with half her heart. If she’s going to do it, she’s going to do it with presence.

    Plot twist: don’t do it.
If you have to work SO hard to psych yourself up for something, maybe you just need to say screw it. Of course, this isn’t always the best option, but it’s worth considering. Why do you want to be excited about this task? Would you feel better if you could simply dump it off your plate and devote energy to things you’re naturally excited about? If you can give it up, and you want to give it up…give it up.

Put your big girl panties on and just fucking do it!
The Queen of Wands is not someone who wastes a lot of energy whining and pattering about. If she needs to do something, she buckles down and DOES IT. You can be the same. No more excuses, no more procrastinating. Tell yourself you’re excited, jump up and down. Decide you’ve got this, then go get it!

    Feeling psyched up yet?!

Tarot can’t tell you what you don’t already know (video)

Before I talk too much about the topic at hand, let me pause a moment to say…

HOLY SMOKES, MY WEBSITE HAS BEEN REVAMPED! A new domain name and a new header, whoo hoooo! This site now officially lives at carriemallon.com (happyfishtarot.com, my previous domain name, will now re-direct here). How exciting is that?!

Now, back to our regularly scheduled program.

Last week, I was listening to Biddy Tarot’s podcast with Benebell Wen. It was an intriguing interview overall, and this one particular insight stood out to me the most:

Tarot can’t tell you what you don’t already know.

Now, that knowledge might be inaccessible – buried in your unconscious mind – but in some hidden way…you know.

I elaborate more on this in the video:

Thanks for watching, and as always, I’d be happy to hear your thoughts – leave a comment!

All the fishes in the sea could not be happier than me

Being mystical me with the Prisma Visions Tarot

“All the fishes in the sea, could not be happier than me.” -Jewel

Changes are coming in my business. It’s about to become even more, well, authentically me.

(TLDR version: starting very soon, HappyFishTarot.com will become CarrieMallon.com and I’ll be conducting business under my own name. I wanna explore this shift further, so here we go!)

Authenticity is not a state you can peg down and then just hang out there forever. Your authentic self evolves, expands, changes. Sure, you probably have some solid traits that remain consistent, but others will morph as you experience life. What felt authentic to you a year ago (or a decade ago, or yesterday) might now feel stifling, less like the truth and more like a role you’re playing.

Expressing yourself authentically also inevitably makes you vulnerable. It may sound a bit wonky, but it helps to ask yourself what is the worst that could happen – and remember that these worst-case scenarios are often far hairier in our heads than they are in reality. Let’s look at a few “bad” things that could happen when you show up authentically:

  • People might reject you, or react cynically
  • People might not understand, or try to put you in a box
  • You may feel embarrassed, awkward, lonely
  • You may second guess yourself
  • This is why devoting to authenticity requires resilience and courage and a healthy dose of bad-assery. Maybe you’ll experience some of the things listed above…but you might not experience any of them. Despite the “risks,” humans seem to be magnetically drawn to the downright MAGIC that comes with authenticity. Because here are some more things that might happen when you become more you:

  • People might resonate with you in meaningful, profound ways
  • People might allow themselves greater authenticity thanks to your example
  • You may feel more alive, whole, radiant
  • You may bust right the fuck through the limits you’ve built around yourself
  • Time for me to get a little more personal with all this theoretical stuff!

When I started my business, using a business name – Happy Fish Tarot – did feel authentic. I was launching a tarot business, after all, and a business needs to have a name…right? I liked the name Happy Fish Tarot. It developed multiple layers of meaning for me over time, and it served me well.

But as my business grew and taught me more about myself, the name Happy Fish Tarot started to feel a little more like a fortress protecting vulnerable little ME from the frontline. I liked the name, yes, but it was also a way to take the attention off…well, the woman behind the curtain.

Of course, there are instances in which it is completely logical to use a business name. But Happy Fish Tarot is, and has always been, something deeply personal. It’s a platform that allows me to express and explore my views. It’s a ship I run completely on my own. It’s a business based around on-on-one client work. The common denominator in all this is…well…me.

As much as that makes me kinda blush and want to hide from the spotlight…there you have it. I won’t hide. I’ll even use a bigger font size! Happy Fish Tarot is, and always has been, Carrie Mallon.

The thing is, I’ll continue to change and become even MORE me, but I’ll always be me. Using my name in business is liberating. Tarot is something that’s here to stay, but this change is my way of giving myself permission to branch out. Using a business name – especially one with the word ‘tarot’ – was starting to make me feel a touch boxed in. I already blog about all kinds of stuff under the personal growth umbrella: creativity, spirituality, tarot and so on. Using my own name seems more fitting in that sense.

So, yeah. That’s what’s happening! Within the next week or so, happyfishtarot.com will forward to carriemallon.com. There will be a few little changes to my site, but my services – tarot readings and mentorships – will remain the same.

Thanks for hanging out with me on the ride, and remember: it’s ALWAYS worthwhile to make adjustments that allow you to feel more like yourself. In fact, that’s what life is all about.

Feeling disconnected from yourself: a few thoughts

    Hey there!

If you follow me on Instagram or Facebook, you probably saw that I just bought my first house! Things’ve been a little haywire as I’m settling in. I finally have internet up and working, so I should be more present online going forward!

Alongside the mayhem of moving, I found myself feeling a little… disconnected for a week or so. I felt like no matter how hard I tried to align with my more magical, sparkling nature… it just wasn’t working. I didn’t feel QUITE like myself.

In this video, I talk about those periods of disconnection, and offer some advice if you’ve ever found yourself in a similar state.

Oh, and I’m happy to report that I’m feeling much more groovy now!

There is no fixed recipe for a tasty life

Hey guys – I’m baaack! My blog took a holiday nap, and now it has woken up refreshed and ready to resume new posts each Tuesday.

While my blog has been sleeping, I have been very much awake. I travelled across the country for Christmas. I lovingly completed a multitude of readings for my clients. And the biggest news: I’ve been packing up the apartment I’ve lived in for six years, and I’ve been painting, cleaning and otherwise preparing my new home.

I’ve found myself wishing there were two of me lately. I am really excited about my new house – I’m a Cancer and the concept of home is crucial to us – but it has left me with less time and energy than usual to devote to my business. This has been a struggle for me because I LOVE my business. It is one of the most important things in my life.

This morning I asked for guidance from the Japaridze tarot and drew the Two of Gardens. This card speaks gorgeously to what I’ve been going through lately, and it’s a reminder that adjusting priorities is something we ALL have to handle.

Because the truth is that there is no FIXED recipe for a tasty life. We can’t divvy up our time and energy into rigid categories and stick to them always (as tempting as that sounds!). Our energy, focal points and interests are constantly in flux.

Sometimes home life will be your main focus, and you’ll have to shift some attention away from other happenings. Other times work, health, or hobbies will take center stage.

We are all juggling a combination of focuses, doing our best to make space (be that space big or small) for the various facets of our life.

The balancing act of being human is kind of like being a chef. You have to constantly taste your life and consider what needs adjusting. Do you need another dash of play? Maybe a pinch of solitude? Perhaps you need to get a better handle on your work life, or give some extra attention to your home life. The recipe truly isn’t fixed – it’s a process of constantly tasting your life and shifting as you go.

Of course, we can’t skate over the fact that this juggling act can be difficult. It can feel like too much to handle, it can be awkward and clumsy. It’s important to remember that we’re not in this alone. Everyone you know is trying to keep their own balls in the air, and everyone you know struggles with this process sometimes.

The key is finding the joy in the juggle, thinking of it as a game instead of a burden. We can’t do it all, so it’s okay to let some stuff drop. We might make mistakes from time to time, but then we can pick up the pieces and move forward. It is okay to experiment with what works for you. It is okay to change your priorities from day to day, week to week, even hour to hour.

Roll with your shifting energy and take care of yourself. Fixating on what you ‘should’ be doing will only further drain your energy.

Be here now, do what you can, and have a damn good time making up your own recipe as you go along.

Three ways to level up for your new year with tarot

The Hermit :: Dreaming Way Tarot

Can you feel that? That little pull, that heightened sense of possibility bubbling up within you? Uh huh, that’s the new year energy starting to swirl around! At this time of year, a lot of us feel like we are being called to level up: to feel better, to create change, to acknowledge our weaknesses and enhance our strengths. Of course, you can choose to level up on any date, but it’s fun to tap into the symbolic power we bestow on New Years Day.

If you are ready to up your game in 2016 and could use some additional perspective…turn to the cards. Tarot can help you clarify your existing goals for the year, and it can also bring light to things you haven’t yet considered. You can use tarot to enhance your game plan for 2016, or you can use tarot to create your approach from scratch. Here are three ways you can level up for your new year with tarot!

    1. Use this spread to reflect on the previous year

A new year offers a chance for a fresh start, but none of us are starting with a blank canvas. Before you fixate on the masterpiece you want to create next year, consider what you’ve painted this year. Here’s a simple and effective three card spread to help you look back at the past year. This will help you move into 2016 with useful knowledge about where you’ve been.

When you’re clear about the past, it’s a lot easier to get clear about the future. (tweet this)

Card one: What do I most need to reflect on from 2015?
Card two: What might I need to leave behind?
Card three: What is best to carry forward?

    2. Open yourself to monthly synchronicities

A lot of people draw twelve cards at the beginning of the year, using them to consider incoming energies for each month. I did this a little differently this year, and my approach might work for you, as well. When I drew my twelve cards, I took note of overall trends and possibilities, but I didn’t attempt predictions.

Instead, at the beginning of each month, I turned again to the card that I’d drawn. I jotted down any ideas I already had about how that card might be relevant to my life. Then, as the month progressed, I would make note of any synchronicities that transpired, and consider any new insights the month brought me regarding my selected card.

This exercise is interesting in a few ways. First, it helps you stay mindful. Since the cards haven’t been used to make definitive predictions, your chosen card becomes more of a jumping off point to look for possibilities. Second, it can help deepen your relationship with the cards and expose you to different angles of their messages. Try this for yourself this year and see how things unfold!

    3. Choose a theme word for the year

I am not anti-resolution, but I do find that resolutions sometimes become stiff and uninspiring. For 2015, I decided to try something different and used a theme word for the first time. A theme word (otherwise known as a power word) is an intuitively selected word that you use as a beacon for your year.

This worked really well for me largely because using a theme word is open ended. I selected my word using tarot, and here’s how you can do the same! Get your deck and shuffle, asking to be guided to a word that will uplift you during 2016. Pull three cards. As you look at your cards, let each card intuitively inspire one word.

It’s important to note that your word may or may not be related to the card’s traditional meaning. The point is to let the cards serve as a springboard for your imagination. Once you have three words, you can then choose the one that resonates the most strongly with you. That’ll become your theme word for the year!

If you’d like some additional guidance, I’m now offering Setting Your Theme for 2016 readings – click here for more info. In addition to reflecting on the previous year and giving insight for the year ahead, this reading also gives you three specific words that you might use as your theme for the year.

This year, I’m going to try something a little different. I’m going to use two theme words – one that I consciously choose, and one that I’m guided to through tarot. You can use theme words however you like. Take this concept and mold it so that it suits you!

So, what do you think? Leave me a comment and let me know if you’ll be trying any of these approaches as you head bravely into your new year.
