It seems like a day doesn’t go by when I don’t see someone enthusiastically declaring “EVERYONE should do THIS THING! It’s SUCH an amazing thing and it changed my life!”
What ‘this thing’ is varies, but it’s always something that the person found to be transformational. It might be a way of eating (vegan! Paleo! Raw! Whatever!), or it might be a book (Course in Miracles! The Secret! Whatever!) or it might be something else entirely.
When people find these transformational things, they want to share (or even force!) them onto others. This can be good and useful…but it can also tread into more murky territory. That’s what I’m talking about in this video.

When I began to research antidepressants I learned that any given prescription only works for 40% of the people to whom it’s prescribed. For that 40% that medication will be life-changing– sometimes life-saving. But more that half of the seekers have to return to their prescriber and discuss a different dose or a different medication type or class.
This is the way I look at just about all transformational things. When thousands or millions of people try something good and powerful (I’m visualizing a best-selling nonfiction book as an example), 40% of that number is still a huge number. They can generate hundreds or thousands of positive reviews, and that can create the illusion of *panacea!*.
It was a huge growth-step for me to accept that organizing systems were one of those things where I was consistently in the 60%. I made the concious decision to be celebratory/excited for people who found their success in that way, and to quit spilling my own energy in persuit of that fix-all.
I’ve always felt as though everything ought to be figured out by now (I mean, over a century of electric living & running water to help us manage and maintain our homes; thousands or years raising children, dealing with other humans: *hello!* shouldn’t this all have been figured out eons ago?
And so I look for that ________, and get miffed when I learn I’ll basically have to make it up as I go along.
But really, accepting that there are good things that are simply incompatible with me (perhaps even on a cellular level) was itself a transformational discovery.
You’ve shown a lot of wisdom in these words. I’ve never heard that 40% statistic – that’s a really interesting example of how something can be a game changer for some and not do much for others! I also had to smile about your feelings that everything should be figured out by now. 😉
