Each tarot card is infused with symbols, philosophies and meanings – giving the cards a limitless intrigue. In the Life Lessons :: Tarot Card Meanings series, I will explore one card and some of the lessons it has to offer.

The Fool Tarot Card Meanings Keywords:

  • Beginnings
  • Pure Potential
  • Freedom

The Fool is the first card in the tarot deck, bearing the number zero. He seems to stride towards a cliff edge, holding a flower in his hand while a dog hops along beside him. The sun shines brightly in the sky above. What does it mean when The Fool tarot card appears in a reading? Let’s examine some of the lessons this card may have to offer you.

We Are ALL Fools!

The Fool Tarot card is said to represent each of us. He journeys freely through the rest of the cards, encountering different characters and situations along the way. He strides through life without a care in the world (I think his cares are stuffed inside that knapsack thrown over his shoulder). He appears unconcerned about the cliff edge he is approaching. Maybe he is naive, maybe he is living up to his foolish name…or maybe he just knows something we don’t.

Beginner’s Mind

The Fool is not tied down by a pre-determined worldview. He has no limiting thoughts, no emotional baggage. He is open to new ideas and possibilities because he is not attached to old ones. He offers a fresh perspective and can guide us towards creative ways of living. He embodies the idea that ‘a beginner’s mind is an open mind.’ He is often able to succeed in his endeavors because his unbiased approach lets him see solutions that others overlook.

Footloose and Fancy-Free

The Fool represents pure, unbridled potential. Considering what others think never even crosses his mind. The Fool marches to the beat of his own drummer – not because he is trying to be rebellious – he simply follows his instincts and trusts the results. Like the honey badger, “the Fool don’t care.” He is curious and excited to discover what the world has to offer. He is about the here and now. For better or for worse, he isn’t focused on the past or the future. He also has an adorable puppy – does he really need any other reason to be happy?

Just Be.

When the Fool Tarot card shows up in a reading, he can encourage you to “just be.” If you’ve been trying to solve a problem and feeling ‘stuck,’ the Fool suggests the answer isn’t always through analyzing. He offers you the chance to loosen up – follow your heart and don’t get so bogged down with worries. If you follow his lead and stash your cares away in a knapsack for the time being, you might find yourself in a world of possibilities. Fling out your arms and forget about what people might think. You might be leery of acting foolish, but remember that sometimes the Fool turns out to be the wisest of us all.
