Each tarot card is infused with symbols, philosophies and meanings – giving the cards a limitless intrigue. In the Life Lessons :: Tarot Card Meanings series, I will explore one card and some of the lessons it has to offer. Each card has a wide spectrum of meanings, so this post is not meant to be all inclusive!
Ten of Pentacles Tarot Card Meanings Keywords:
- Stability
- Convention
- Security
You’re browsing through your Facebook newsfeed. You see pictures from your cousin’s med school graduation. Your best friend is gushing about her new promotion. Your co-worker posted pictures from a trip to Europe. Judging by their social media output, everyone seems happy and stable. And you? You’re spending your Friday night browsing the internet while having wine & cereal for dinner.
And you think to yourself…am I the only one who doesn’t have my shit together?!
Every Monday, I do a mini-reading for my followers on Facebook, while asking the cards “what do my internet friends need to know this week?” This Monday, I pulled the reversed Ten of Pentacles. On Tuesday, I decided to post a mini-reading on Instagram. I shuffled (super-well) and pulled out – the reversed Ten of Pentacles. (There are, of course, many ways to read reversed cards. I’ll talk about my thoughts on that in another post.)
‘What does this mean? Why’d I get this card twice?’ I asked myself. And then I answered: ‘People don’t have their shit together the way they think they should.’
The Ten of Pentacles shows us the ideal societal image of having your shit together. Cordial grown-ups chit-chatting, a kid and dogs at their side. They’ve got financial security, they know their place in society. They are functioning, contributing adults. Their world is orderly, structured and sensible. I bet they even floss their teeth every day.
Think about where you are in your life, especially when it comes to matters of stability, security and convention. How traditional is your lifestyle? Are you a healthy cog in the societal machine? Has your life turned out according to plan?
In other words, do you have your shit together?
I don’t know many people who can fully answer ‘yes’ to this question. Yet we all at times fall into the trap of thinking that everyone else has their shit together, and we’re the odd ones out. Social media sure hasn’t helped this. It seems befitting that I drew this card twice in a row – when I was reading on social media sites. It’s easy to choose how to present yourself online. Most people choose to show only the pretty, socially acceptable bits.
Even those of us who are fairly established and stable in our lives still have things to figure out. Even the people who post all the enlightened quotes with pictures of sunsets, the people who meditate every day, the people who get promotions & travel & take yoga classes.
We all have some form of shit we’re still trying to figure out.

This doesn’t give us license to be irresponsible, but when you realize that no one’s got it all figured out, it lets you breathe a sigh of relief. It lets you know we’re all trying, and where you are in your journey is okay. It’s your journey. Don’t get tripped up by comparing your journey to someone else’s – especially when you’re only seeing the shiny, internet worthy parts.

Weird, I just wrote about something similar, since I’ve also been getting a variation on this story all week (although not with the added punch of a repeated card).
Sometimes I find that other people’s online highlight reels add to a general sense that I should be a different, more soundbite-and-photo-worthy version of myself. It’s lame, and I know better. But it can be so hard to remember on a daily basis.
I hear you, lady. Even though I am a fairly self-confident & steady person, I still sometimes have those weak moments of social-media blues. Thanks for the comment – now I’m off to check out your post! 🙂
